I have a basement shop, and am pretty fortunate as far as square footage goes (about 1500). I started with a couple of drills, a skil saw, and some cheap hand tools when I started my workbench. I have slowly aquired new tools and machinery and have enough now to build a decent set of cabinets. The best thing about being in the basement is the stable temperature. I never really feel the need to heat it up or cool it off. I’ve been known to open the back door in the spring or fall when the weather is just too nice to ignore.
I have a 1.5 HP Delta tablesaw and dust collector, a 2.25 HP Bosch router and the table (which I plan to “enhance” later), an old Craftsman radial arm saw (which almost never gets used), a DeWalt 12” Miter Saw, lots of small power tools, a big screen TV for bowl season, and I just bought a 14” Jet bandsaw. It’s all very unorganized right now as I have little time to really get involved in my shop right now. I’m working on my masters at night, but will be done soon!
Eventually, I’d like to build some cabinets and do some painting to finish the shop off, but it will probably be a while before I get a round to it. I’ve got a sketchup model of what I want my shop to eventually look like and I’ll try to post a picture of that model soon.

Curt,
It sounds like you have an interesting shop. How about posting some pictures?
