Retired in 2000 (Engineering Program Manager at TRW in Sunnyvale, CA) and returned to KY. Bought a used ShopSmith and Misc other items and began woodworking (Hobby only). Currently in my second shop and still having a lot of fun. I am gradually replacing the ShopSmith capabilities with dedicated tools.
I've built a large number of items, including a small china cabinet, dining table (No chairs -- bought those), and numerous occasional tables, cabinets etc.
Watched David Marks on DIY Network until I got enough courage to try bent wood lamination. Made my version of a demilune table and liked it so much that I've tried a couple more tables with curved aprons, including a Sheraton-style sofa table.
My most recent challenge was a walnut floor lamp with a quad-spiral column. This was my first-ever attempt at anything remotely resembling freehand carving. I was extremely pleased with the results, even though I was skeptical until just about the end. Again, David Marks videos on DIY and Charles Neil videos on his web site gave me the courage and background information to pull this off.
