Last week’s event in Chicago was fantastic. Being a novice, I really learned a lot from the many demonstrations and from getting to play with some fine tools. A couple of highlights for me were being able to try out Chris Schwarz’s ebony infill smoothing plane (by Wayne Anderson) and hearing Jeff Miller discuss the design and production of his beautiful Cantata chair. I was disciplined enough not to buy anything, although when I got home I ordered a large shoulder plane (Veritas, sorry Lie-Nielsen!) based on suggestions by people at the show and Dorje.
I took some video of Chris’s hand plane talk. It’s a little shaky (done with a little Flip Ultra), but I think the message comes across. Here’s the first part on the fore plane and jointer plane.
The second part covers the smoothing plane, high angle infill smoother, and scraper.
In the third part he addresses some myths about orienting boards in a panel and never setting your planes down on the sole.
In this video, he discusses bevel-up versus bevel-down planes.
As an encore, he showed how to use the reflection in your saw blade to improve your cuts.

Wow! Thanks kem – really appreciate the work you put into sharing these videos, and that’s great that Chris Schwarz was into it too!
Enjoy the new shoulder plane – that’s a big daddy! Mike L. just got the LN large shoulder, so you guys just balanced that equation out!
Thanks again!
