The timing on this challenge was interesting because I was in the process of doing a remodeling job for my wife. We have a small “upstairs” area build over the garage and she wanted to turn what had been a bedroom into a library.
The “library” had what was a long narrow closet. We removed the doors and are in the process of building a bookcase in the 28 inch deep ten foot long area making it into a storage place for all her books.
After some though and working with a friend we designed a U shaped bookcase that has a ten foot long set of shelves with cabinets at the bottom and two ends at right angles from these shelves at the ends.
The thing that really makes this interesting is that it requires turning as we decided that the shelves would sit on turned dividers roughly 12” long. It also requires the construction of the bookshelves and the raised panel cabinet doors. Finally we wanted this to be really striking so we added carved designs on to the front of each shelf.
I have not learned any of the drawing programs so had to design the way this would look using the old fashioned way….hand drawing.

We have been turning the supports that will go between the shelves. There is a photo of some of them that might give you a better idea of what the concept is to use these as the “dividers.”

John,
This is an interesting bookcase.
Good luck in the contest.

Thanks! I love the “all things are possible” quote. I’m living proof that with HIS help all things are possible.
