You Never Think It's Going To Happen To You

Blog entry by jockmike2 posted 190 days ago 370 reads 0 times favorited 32 comments Add to Favorites

Well it can and it does, I just got out of the hospital after a lengthy stay, where they removed a good chunk of my pretty face. Left cheek to be exact. Squamous cell carcanoma I think they called it. Once diagnosed, they wasted no time getting it out either. Which further scared me. Me, being a fair skinned Irish laddy have been sun burnned continuosly since I was a tottler. The Doc said thats how you get this kind, it does’nt just happen, it takes years. Why am I writting about it here, well because when I was a youngster we did’nt know what spf meant and did’nt care. I would get burned on top of getting burned. It’s really a wonder my ears haven’t fallen off. Plus I had surgury on the other end I’d rather not talk about. I would just like to give a frendly warning to all the jocks out there that like to take there shirts off when the weathers nice, I know I used love it when I was framing, to me it was’nt work. Get out there soak up the rays and hammer away. It was fun to me. Anyway either wear a shirt or hat or both and don’t forget the kids for Gods sakes, thats were it starts. Remember, you can save them agony, or disfigurement down the road. God Bless, mike

Above the age of 50 regular visits to the skin Dr are in order. He regularly ‘freezes’ pre- cancerous growths on my head about every six months or so. Speedy recovery Mike.

Mike,

I am so sorry to hear about this. I wish you nothing but the best and hope you have a speedy recovery. I think that we all take sun exposure for granted and forget that in the long run it can be quite dangerous. A hat and sun screen are just as important safety devices as hearing protection, push sticks and safety glasses.

You will be in my prayers and may God bless.

Yea, my sister who cuts my hair has been telling me for 5 years to get it looked at. So I did last year and my doctor froze it off, but it came right back, only bigger and deeper, now I have a 2 1/2 ” scar to remind me.

Been there Mike. Had many small ones removed by ‘freeze’, but two had to be revoved with the knife. One on my ear and the other one on my nose. I don’t tan and as a kid growing up in hot Oklanoma I tried to do what the other kids did, run around without a hat and shirt off. Dumb. Now every time I see some young person laying out in the sun, I can just feel that sunburn that I remember so will. I am now recovering from colon cancer surgery from three weeks ago. What a bumber to get old. I hope you are done with this skin cancer stuff. I don’t know how people get through things like this without faith in God.

Good to know that you are out of the woods now Mike (damn, may I even say that is good to be far from the wood, here?) ;o)

Thank you for sharing all that with the community. This is what might help future generations, too bad ours didn’t get this kind of knowledge on time.

Rah, this looked gray, scaley, soft, I would pick it off and it would grow right back only bigger. No matter what they look like if it looks unusual, get it checked. Thanks all for your support and prayers but more important take care of yourselves and your children. mike

Mike, this is a poignant story and I am glad that the docs caught it and took care of it. I was a lifeguard all through high school in the high altitude sun of Colorado and I remember slathering the stuff on while watching all of the patrons of the country club foregoing it for the sake of cosmetic beauty. I’m an Irish lad like yourself and just burned so it was always sun block for me. This one will definately strengthen my convictions. Get better soon!

We’re sorry to hear about this health problem. You’ve had more than a fair share of this in the past year.

We hope, & pray things turn for the better for you.

I had one of them frozen off of my nose quite a few years ago, That’s why I started wearing a wider brim hat.

I wish you a full and speedy return to health. In the defense of the sun, my problems are the result of my own stupidity which has yielded my mouth, tongue and throat irreparable damage due to my love of smoke and strong drink.
