JJ, how thick do you plan to make the Oak strips? If you make them thick enough, you could either spline or biscuit join them to the shelves. Not sure, but I think either PVA or Gorilla glue would hold them well. Good luck.

Only planed about 1/2”. I thought about pinning and glue just not sure how well the press board will hold a nail. and if it will swell along the edge where the glue is placed. Wasn’t that concerned about the dado’s, figured that if it swelled it would only help, and there were so many glued places that it would most likely hold the carcass together simple because of the massive amount of them.

I guess I’ll just try doing it to a couple of scrape pieces to see the effect of the final result. I’ll try to remember to post a comment about it on part 3.

Gorilla glue tends to foam, squeeze out everywhere and create a mess. They do make a wood veneer “edge banding’ that has a hot melt glue on the back. You apply this with an iron. Trims and sands easily leaving a nice edge.

There’s also a router bit set (this is getting expensive now) that routes a rounded or v-shaped groove in your panel. The other bit carves (routes) the reverse groove in the edging material, then you glue the two together. It’s great for large production jobs where you want like a 1” thick breadboard edge. Anything wider than that I’d go with bisquets…and I do. And I just did too, on my last project.

:-) I came on LJ this morning hoping to do a search for “ScrapBook” to get some inspiration for a similar project for my girlfriend. Instead I hit the recent projects and recent blogs as I normally do and lo and behold, I saw your post from just a few hours ago :-)

I like the design with the individual cubbies for the different papers, but is there a reason you used such thick stock for the paper shelves? In the one I was planning to make I was thinking of something closer to 1/4” The paper isn’t extremely heavy and it only has to span 12 1/2”

Also, what is the spacing between your paper shelves?

The only other thing I might add to round out this project would be something to hold spools of ribbon(with a dowel to run through their spools) I’m not sure about your wife, but my girl friend uses ribbon on almost every page… so it would be nice to have it close at hand and on display to ‘Fuel’ her creativity… :-)

EDIT: Just read part #1… I see you had the ribbon idea too… ;-)
