Night Stand Reproduction #1: Back Into The Shop

Well – here we go again. It’s actually been quite some time since I’ve last made anything with wood. I believe it was December when I made what seemed like a thousand turned pens as Christmas gifts (I do love making the pens :o).

Since then, it’s been a battle of time and energy with the birth of my second boy and the start of house-hunting for our first home-purchase.

But as it has been every time I have a lull in woodworking, there comes a time when the bug is too strong to resist. And so comes my next project – a night stand.

For years, our bedroom set has been shy one night stand (something about the set being discontinued and not having the second night stand available to sell) – and I have always wanted to try reproducing the existing night stand so I could finally have drawer space instead of the black iron round table I currently use in it’s place.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the funds available to afford matching the same wood type as the rest of the bedroom set – I don’t even have the funds to come close. So I’m left with making it out of white pine and will be presented with the enviable opportunity to get creative with my wood-finishing in effort to match the color and look of the finer wood.

Here is what I have to work with (I do so love SketchUp :o):

I have purchased my supplies over the weekend and even made a few priliminary cuts – but was called away shortly after beginning by my son’s nap-time (and the Texas heat didn’t help either). So I hope to inch my way forward with this perhaps in the evenings after the kids are in bed and the son had begun to drop in the sky.
