« Part 3: And the pen journey continues... Part 4 of Pen Turners' Swap #2 series Part 5: Big Box o' Blanks »

Ho, Ho, Ho Lumberjocks! The presents keep circulating among us pen turners and the box is currently in the hands of ShannonRogers in beautiful Maryland. Shannon dropped me a PM when he received the box and I can tell he’s excited to dig into it. :-)

Here’s our updated map…

Good news for Karson, the box doesn’t have far to travel when in leaves Shannon’s hands!

The Box arrived on the 23rd of July. It’s starting to show some bent corners from all of it’s travels. I opted to leave the box alone and add my stuff.

Here is what I found when I opened it.

I took out a Pen and Pencil set and a Piece of Koa.

I knew the box was coming so I set out to get some blanks ready. Over the Memorial Day weekend, my son-in-law help me cut 7 dead trees that were on my property. This is the wood pile.

It turns out that there was some spalted oak and spalted holly in those trees.

So I cut some blanks.

I went to my stash stored in some totes outside and picked up this.

It’s some Osage Orange Root, and Maple crotch and Oak crotch, and Cherry crotch.

So I made up some packages of blanks.

I ran out of baggies so I got some today and got the box all packed up. Too late to hit the PO so It will go Monday.

Here’s what I added.
Figured Oak Crotch (6); Figured Maple Crotch (6); Osage Orange root (6); Big Leaf Maple Burl (Oregon) (5); Cherry Crotch (6); Camphor (5 long, 4 shorts); Spalted Oak (8); Sapele (6); Red Cedar (7); Desert Ironwood (1); Curly Oak (5); Spalted Holly (13); Sasafrass (7); Nicaguran Rosewood (1);

A total of 86 Blanks. The Box is now full. You guys that are following me make sure that you take a selection of the choices. I won’t feel bad if you take 6-7 pieces and only put one back. I’m just trying to spread the wealth of stuff that I have.

Tim you might want to put me on the front of distribution #3 so everyone will get some of these choice blanks.

On the spalted Holly I hope when you turn them that the spalt shows up. Otherwise it will be just plain Holly. The spalting was not very heavy.

WOW! Amazingly generous Karson, those are some great looking blanks!

I turned a piece of the orange root you sent around last time and it is amazing, very unique with great contrasting yellow/brown grain pattern. There’s a pic of it here, but it doesn’t do it justice.

I know everyone will enjoy your additions – thanks again Karson!

Oops! Correction – what I turned was the smokewood bush and not the orange root!

Hey send that back my way! Now I have to sign up for round #3 to get my hands on Karson’s bounty. I might make the drive over to DE under cover of darkness and raid his wood pile.

Shannon, from the looks of it you better rent a U-Haul before you take that trip!

Tim:

The box was shipped today. Just a little note about the box. The counter man didn’t notice that it was a fixed rate box. He charged me by weight and it was 13.20 where as fixed rate was 12.95 I think. He said its weighs a lot more now than when it was shipped to me. Which means it some cases shipping by weight might be cheaper. Like I said in my post there is not any empty space in the box now.
