I just looked at my workshop page and noticed that in the few months I’ve been on here I’ve been really busy building out my shop, I’ve made a few small purchases along the way and went all out this week and bought a few big items. I was invited to join a local group of woodworkers here and was introduced to craigslist as well as going to ‘The Woodworking Show’ here in Atlanta last weekend.
I’ve never been much for moderation or patience; I’ve really put a lot into my shop in a short amount of time. My biggest challenge now is that I’m trying to turn 1/2 of a 2-car garage into a functional and efficient workshop.
I hadn’t necessarily intended to buy anything major at the show but Ridgid had their oscillating spindle sander there at a great price so I had to grab one. I’d also found a Delta bandsaw on craigslist and ended up getting that for only $200.00, it’s in great shape just needed a new blade. The guy selling it was basically frustrated because he didn’t know how to tune it. And finally… I had some $ left from a HD gift card so I got a Ryobi 12” drill press – variable speed and digital readout. I haven’t had great experience with Ryobi tools but read several reviews of this particular drill press and it rates pretty good.
So, my shop is coming along nicely now. I’m trying to convince my wife that a foyer and dining room and unnecessary, the space would be much better used if we took out a wall and expanded my shop… I don’t think she’s buying what I’m selling.
Next on my list is to upgrade the workbenches / tool stations. I want to build a bench and integrate a dust extraction system into it. Last tools on the ‘immediate needs’ list are a planer and mini-lathe, I hope to get those soon.

Wonderful. One of the benefits of this hobby is the acquisition of new tools. For some of us pursuing the tool odyssey is just as important as making sawdust. Now maybe you can talk her out of the other side of the garage (good luck) so that you can have more shop space. I am sure I know whose vehicle gets to sit outside (it sure isn’t your wife’s).
