In my workshop I’ve currently got mostly Shopsmith tools, due to the fact that I’m in the garage (which is a “nasty” word – it has been officially renamed “the workshop”.) My wife seems to think that the part of the house with the big door in front is for the van… I can’t seem to convince her that vehicles go outside. Oh, well…

I’ve got a Shopsmith Mark V (520) and a Shopsmith “mini” – a SS jointer, planer, bandsaw, scrollsaw, and strip sander. I use a DeWalt 746 with Jointech SawTrain for the real bulk of the tablesaw/router station work. I try my hand at just about everything, but like mainly to do cabinet work and lathe work.

UPDATE – Well, it was finally time to make the shop a bit more usable and space-friendly. It was a long time coming… a complete shop tear-down isn’t something I looked forward to. Anyway, it is done and back in order and I think the results speak for themselves.

Shopsmith planer – also a 6” jointer on the Shopsmith “mini.” Sharpening station on the other end of the mini.

Scrollsaw, etc.

Full-size Shopsmith with bandsaw – with Kreg fence. Shopsmith is set up here as a molder.

New outfeed table/assembly table/storage. (This was my winter project.)

Table saw with router station – Jointech system; like Incra, but better (in my opinion)

Outfitted with the digital Smartlift.

And, finally, the workbench. Not the greatest, but it works for me.

Nice setup Hops… tell your wife you’re thinking of placing some tools IN the van to get more room to work and I’ll bet she says it can stay outside. ;-)

I keep telling her that that’s why the vehicles have paint on them, but she doesn’t seem to understand. Perhaps your suggestion will work!
Actually, she’s quite understanding – her father’s a woodworker, too. She grew up around sawdust. I really can’t complain.

Thanks for the pictures! I like that fence that you have on your bandsaw. I need one like that on mine.

The router is my workhorse Porter Cable 7518 in a Jointech SmartLift, digital. The digital is pretty cool – I was about to buy a different one but then caught wind that the digital one from Jointech was in the works, so I waited. This is my first-ever router lift!

I mount the bit, the “zero out” the readout and then raise the bit to the height I need/want, and then record that information in my books. Then, if I have to go back and re-do (or wish to re-create it, or whatever) I have near-perfect repeatability. It has saved me more than once already. It is pretty slick being able to raise the bit a 1000th… and yes, that very little bit does make a difference!

Hi Hops,

This is a nice looking shop space that you have and a nice set of tools to play with. Congrats on getting the vehicles outside. I can honestly say that if I tried to do that with my wife’s truck I would be outside before her truck would be. I am just glad I had the foresight to add a third garage in our walk-out basement. My truck sits outside but I am not complaining.

Thanks for sharing.
