Famowood for Filling Walnut Grain

Blog entry by hokieman posted 103 days ago 122 reads 0 times favorited 5 comments Add to Favorites

I am working on a project with walnut. I will be filling the grain. Highland Hardware catalog says “Thinned with water to the consistendy of ketchup, Famowood becomes a superb surface filler, leveling pores and hiding texture.” Has anyone used Famowood for this use? I wouldn’t have considered it until I saw Highland endorsing it. Are there other better materials to fill walnut grain? Thanks.

Hokie – I’ve used their cherry variety, but only for filling small gaps and a goof or two. It did a pretty good job. I thinned it only a little bit (a little thicker than Ketchup I would say). I don’t think anyone can tell the difference between the wood and the filler – or at least they’ve been pilot enough not to say.

I only use filler for very small holes, like from brad nails.

Hokie- I have used it a couple of times with good results on small jobs, but never on Walnut. Found it a bit costly and once opened seems to dry out fairly fast.

Most often I need to fill Oak. I have had good results on Oak by using “Elmers Pro Wood Filler”, mixing several colors till I get the right shade, thinning with water and spreading with a plastic spadula. I like being able to adjust the color since I do not agrees with them as to what a oak should look like. Maybe I just buy odd colored wood.

When I made my Thorsen table, I wet sanded it with wipe on poly. It worked fine, & you don’t have to bother with a color match.
