Hello all. I've been lurking in the shadows, just checking out the scene on various wood working forums, figured its high time to introduce myself to you all, seeing this is by far my favorite and most enlightening woodworking sites I've stumbled upon. Here is a quick intro.
I've been involved in some aspect of construction since a pre teen, currently employed in a small construction company which main focus is roofing during the warm months and in cooler times deals in higher end home remodeling and improvement. During the past few years my interest has grown in finer woodwork and finer furniture making, most of which is done in my small basement shop and for my own enjoyment, although I have been blessed with a few regular customers who commission me for small projects, gift boxes, gentleman's vanities, small stuff like that. Also have managed to sell a few toolboxes through word of mouth, which is kinda cool. Some of those will be seen on various local job sites.
I first started using the computer during my track down old tool phase, but after a year or so began to lose interest and focus on the final outcome. I also began to run out of my own ideas and needed inspiration for better things, this site keeps me jaw-dropping amazed.
The nature of my work tends to require portable tools, which seems to work fine for me, forces you to think more about jigs, user position and surroundings. My basement houses most of my better hand tools and planes, as well as some family antiques from my grandfather, power tools are few, older portable table saw, chop saw, router table, and the usual array of battery drills, jig saws, skill saws etc. Pretty much everything else is throw away quality, cheap hand tools, which usually get lost or destroyed on jobs. My reasoning for this is two-fold; I've seen some of the highest skilled craftsmen use some of the most rusted and dull tools with project outcome being museum quality, and I hate seeing a chisel open a paint can, stir the paint, then be used as a screw driver while some other guy is using a screwdriver as a chisel.
Will try to get some picts up soon of projects and shop, maybe some previous jobs, won't bore you with the roofs, might even start to blog. See ya around the site.
