What motivates you?
Often when I’ve been to art and craft shows, quite a few “artisans” have a handout detailing what their motivation is for dedication so much time and effort in their chosen craft. Recently, I wrote one for my interest in rustic f...

I belong to a few other wood forums, but this seems like a really good group. I’ve just started on rustic furniture and trying to develop my own style. I can’t work everyday, but any day I get into the shop is a good day. I recently learned how to really sharpen chisels and blades for my plane and it’s amazing how much better they work, with less effort and best of all, much greater accuracy.
Nice to meet y’all!

Hi Dennis;
—-wow another rustic lover! Yes, rustic furniture and rustic wood art is great and one hot item at the moment and will be for years to come. Developing you own style is really great since you will be showing your own way of what is in the wood. Do you gather your own wood?
Welcome to Lumber Jocks and glad to see you here!
Have a very good day!!!
GODSPEED,
Frank

Yes Frank, I do collect most of my own wood. I do get some cuttoffs from a one-man sawmill not too far from where I live.
But, here’s the deal. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Lived there 45 years. I then moved to Florida. Lived there for near 16 years. About a year or more ago, I had to retire due to medical problems, and just recently started making rustic furniture.
My biggest problem now is identifying wood. I haven’t lived in the mountains long enough to know one from another. I do have a book that I take with me when I go “tree hunting” but I can’t do that often because of the medical things. But I make do with what I select and have really enjoyed myself. The wife “loves” everything I make, but then again, she is a loving wife. LOL
