Gene – I applaud you for doing something to let the powers-to-be know what American’s think. A letter writing campaign certainly won’t hurt. And e-mail is cheaper than a .42 cent stamp!

I’m with you Gene. I gotta be careful here because I will get on my soap box and start a rant, but you hit the nail on the head. Common sence in this country has become a lost idea. The idea of the ’’land of the free and the home of the brave’’ has been lost somewhere along the line.

I am sorry about not giving out the details at this time. I want to give them to someone in office that will use it for the good of the country and not shove it under the table because of their affiliations with business or the big oil companies, of which probably neither will care for this proposal. Someone might send the hit squad. (LOL) This is one reason that I will not go through my own state representatives. (big business)

I’m glad to see people are starting to care what we pay for gas. I personally don’t care if gas goes up to 5 bucks a gallon. Whatever it takes to get people out of there cars and suvs. We drive way to much. The high gas prices are a result of our over use. Untill that is fixed what is the point in lowering the price? They lower the price people can afford more gas, and do more damage to our planet. IMO the gas prices are not the problem. Our need for gas is the problem.

If our gov. wanted to do anything to help us they could start giving bigger tax credits to those buying energy efficient cars. They could even pay for these tax credits with the extra loot they are making off the gas tax. We have to get more of these energy efficient cars on the roads.

The gas price that is killing me is natural gas. My heating bill this winter was almost as much as my house payment. I can ride my bike to save money, but my kids get upset when i turn down the heat.

Josh, basically everything that concerns you will be covered in this program. It’s people with concerns such as yours that will make up the advisory board to the office of the president. Would it be nice to be able to go to sleep at night, knowing that we will cut our oil imports by as much as 75%? Then basically we will be living on our own oil supply. At that time ,we will have time to mandate fuel efficient cars and different forms of energy.
This is why I need everyone’s help getting through. Please re-read my letter and really think about what it is saying.

And Josh, I have a 93 lamina setting in my driveway, purchased new and gets 32 miles, highway.
I would love to have a new pick-up. But until they get the same gas mileage, “No Deal”
To clarify something else. I am one of those individuals that does not take things setting down. For the most part of my life, I have answered but too two, My God and my wife and in that order. I try never to speak in anger because I can never take back what I have said. And I am to old to change my ways! (LOL) As for our politicians, I get up and put my pants on in the morning, just as they do!

You’ve broken the posting rules but I guess I can understand your passion. We all feel the pain.

If your plan is good the best way to get attention paid to it isn’t to write a letter to the president. Our politician’s of all stripes are only interested in maintaining their power and could really care less about the average person’s concerns.

If it’s worthy reveal it here and on other forums where people can see it and understand it and make it their own cause. No offense but being secret about it does makes it sound like a crackpot scheme. Nobody is going to be willing to back you without understanding just what it is you are proposing. Be open, tell the story in whole, if it sounds worthy, you’ll get support.

After reading Bob’s comment on the posting rules I realized I never actually read them. So I did, and I apologize for my earlier comment. I should have ignored the post and moved on. I’m not trying to fuel a political debate, and would appreciate everyone reading the new posting rules that Martin has designed and adhering to them. I will do the same.

This is a woodworking forum; not a discussion on politics or religion. That’s (one of) the reason(s) that I stopped going to Knots @ FWW.com. Too much negativity and non-content related stuff.

Please don’t take offense to my mentioning the posting rules. I only commented because you made some political comments in your post. I understand your passion. If you can make your argument or discussion in a apolitical way have at it. I’m all ears. But I can’t blindly support what I don’t understand.

Your post had me thinking though on the ride home from work. One of the consequences of using ethanol as an additive or replacement for gas is the rising price of grain/food. Highway crews were clearing the sides of the road. Branches, small trees, mowing…what if we encouraged the growth of natural plants along the sides of the highways in the US and harvested that to turn into ethanol. As an added benefit a dense planting of 1” to 2” trees will slow a car down if it goes off the highway instead of smacking into a 20” oak at 70 mph.

There are almost 50,000 miles of road in the interstate highway system. I’m not sure what kind of drop in the bucket that represents but its something.

Why we don’t have wind turbines at every viable location is another good question.

There are apolitical solutions to the problems.

Bob-

The reason there aren’t more wind turbines is two-fold:

1. They are EXTREMELY expensive. There are only a ‘handful’ of companies developing commercial wind farms.
2. All of the manufacturers that specialize in raw materials (carbon, resin, etc…) are currently experiencing material shortages.

They are very effective, and the market has growth potential, but until the manufacturers can keep up with demand it will continue to develop slowly.

Ethanol is probably the LEAST VIABLE cure to the situation as everyone else has noted. Acutally, there is no one right answer. It will take a revolution of the way people live, work, think, recreate, eat, sleep, consume, etc…

This is what I study when I’m not reading about WW’ing. It’s truly fascinating.

As Bob pointed out there are other sources than food quality grains/corn suitable for ethanol production. The National Geographic did a pretty interesting article a few months back on biofuels. Apparently in S. America biofuels are very effective and do not use up food crops. Maybe we could all use our sawdust to create ethanol…finally a good use for all of it …even the black walnut sawdust :-)
