Wow. I’m generally not a fan of rustic furniture, but I love when people let the shape of the wood show through the piece, and those are beautiful!

Rob,....I thought I heard some of those guys from Texas coming from your workshop, crank the volume and let the wood chips fly….

Karson,....thats what makes working in rustic so much fun. Actually I try to manipulate the wood as little as possible, and by riving and then using the drawknife I am not cutting the wood grain so much as I am just following the wood grain. Does this make sense? In my way of seeing….by following the grain I am still coming out with superior strength in the wood, over what happens when I used to make the wood fit my design. This is like in timber framing when I will use branch wood at the crutch area to make braces, instead of cutting the wood for the bend. I will use that bend that nature has already wrote into the DNA of the tree and come out with a brace far superior in strength and yet one that is able to move with the wood and barn, due to climate of season and winds. This also holds true in the bracing of wooden boats. And yes, in answer to your question, all the legs will vary some in shape, same as if I was using four separate branches for the legs….but then, that’s why it’s rustic.
