Legs of Beauty
....and so the progress goes on,
in the continuing saga of this one,
who is coming forth from the heart of the tree,
and doing as befits her ‘being’ of becoming set free….
—-having legs of beauty as formed from within,
she soon was noticed as having likened wood skin,
till from the shapely posture of her bijou stance,
i knew their was more here then meets first glance….
—-what i saw in her legs was sweetness of desire,
and from this passion my heart was soon on fire,
my drawknife soon took to shaving those wood figured grains,
where wood was soon felt to be supporting all that reigns….
Having some time Tuesday evening I was able to end the day out in the shop, by starting to rough out the shape of the table legs. Using the drawknife and 1’’ timber chisel, I soon set to task at removing some of the oak wood. Letting the grain of the wood guide me here, I was after a time, soon able to arrive at some rough shape. Last evening I was able to return and get one more leg roughed out, now only one more to do which I hope to complete tonight.
....enjoy….

Thank you.

Frank

Frank. By letting the wood tell you how to shape them. What happens if all 4 lets tell you something different?
Great looking legs.

Wow. I’m generally not a fan of rustic furniture, but I love when people let the shape of the wood show through the piece, and those are beautiful!

—-thanks everyone for your comments!
Debbie, yes sexy….but oh how those legs are useful....
Rob,....I thought I heard some of those guys from Texas coming from your workshop, crank the volume and let the wood chips fly….
Karson,....thats what makes working in rustic so much fun. Actually I try to manipulate the wood as little as possible, and by riving and then using the drawknife I am not cutting the wood grain so much as I am just following the wood grain. Does this make sense? In my way of seeing….by following the grain I am still coming out with superior strength in the wood, over what happens when I used to make the wood fit my design. This is like in timber framing when I will use branch wood at the crutch area to make braces, instead of cutting the wood for the bend. I will use that bend that nature has already wrote into the DNA of the tree and come out with a brace far superior in strength and yet one that is able to move with the wood and barn, due to climate of season and winds. This also holds true in the bracing of wooden boats. And yes, in answer to your question, all the legs will vary some in shape, same as if I was using four separate branches for the legs….but then, that’s why it’s rustic. Thanks for your asking and I was wondering if someone was going to ask this question. Any more questions please feel free to ask away.
Dan,....it makes me also feel good when other’s can see the beauty in the shapes of wood….
Mark,....always giving thanks when I hear of those other’s who love the drawkniife, thanks….
