Blogging at “Eastern Thought”

Building the Timber Frame House” —by Ted Benson and Part 1 the Past, chapter 1; page 3….Ted writes;

If Japanese carpentry was highly evolved, it was also fiercely competitive. The craft was developed within a family guild system that maintained tight security over construction techniques and strict authority concerning procedure among it’s members. Intense rivalry between the major guilds had the positive effect of keeping the standards high; a languid or sloppy attitude could not be tolerated in the heat of contest. But in the attempt to outdo one another, these guilds often produced joints much more puzzling than they were effective. Still, they developed over four hundred joints, and many are still in use today. Japanese tradition has also given modern carpenters a special appreciation for their tools. The word that describes them, Dogu, translates to ‘the instruments of the way’. Because Japanese carpenters are aware of all that has been accomplished with these instruments, they remain reluctant to relegate them to mere tools.

And this is an un-seen world of woodworking and ‘wood joints’ that remains open for exploration and uses to whosoever will come, take and learn….and maybe more to come, I’ll have to give some thought herein….

As I study ‘wood joinery’, my place of learning first hand information as to proper and strong ‘wood joinery’ is often finding myself in the forest. Where as I study trees, I also study how they fall and from this I have learned that some of the best wood joints are those that in in the logging profession are called the ‘widow makers’....

....I found this one out in the woods about two weeks ago and yes, I am standing directly underneath the joint. Even good trees know and understand how to properly fall so as to make a good ‘wood joint’....

Thank you.
GODSPEED,
Frank

”....all that has come before, was mere window dressing, in the now of moment where i am found, and so what will yet be is the coming beauty of radiant ‘wood art’….”
