Hi guys- I promised I would post pictures of my latest project- a 1950s era Craftsman Table Saw… Sorry for the bad pic quality- these were taken with my cell phone. I’ll have better pictures taken when it is fully assembled and in working order…
All torn apart- whoever stored it was smart and poured motor oil over the whole thing
The base alone weighs about 25 pounds
Halfway assembled and all polished up
Table top after 3 coats of Butchers Paste Wax
Made a plate insert out of Ash
One solid fence and table
Not quite done yet, have yet to put all the nuts and bolts back where they belong (and obviously get a motor and mount it).
Does anyone know the best way to get oil off the painted base? I’ve tried paint thinner and heavy duty engine degreaser with very limited success. Also, what kind of motor should I pair up with this beast?

I have been looking for one of those for a long time. Great little saw.
Brake cleaner will get anything off of anything.

And Acetone ,
one of the few solvents that can be used on fibreglass.
Acetone will remove paint and melt plastic and is not the best
thing to came in contact with your skin. But I’ve used it to
remove Gorilla Glue stains on my fingers.

I’ve tried that Gunk foaming engine degreaser, and several tries with brake cleaner, both did marginally. I haven’t tried acetone, but if I do, definitely with caution!

The top looks good, you are trying to clean the casting for the base?
That you might be able to soak it in Krud Kutter full strength.I’ve done
that with a cast iron Bar B Q burner with some success.
Don,
I picked that old Craftsman for about that price.
It has a 3/4 HP 1725 RPM motor, Thats looks like it
may have come from a large blower. Draws a lot
of amps on start wired to 110V. I havn’t turned it on
in 5 years. I should rebuild it like firetowerfp.
The rpm should probably be higher? But that
could be adjusted with the pulley size. I think
a direct drive saw probably is in the 3000 rpm range
