What can you say abou that home built 4×4 CNC Router? That sounds really interesting, being a techie and all.

The CNC router is something I’ve been wanting to build for a couple of years, I recently had the opportunity to buy a prototype from a fellow who designs em and sells the plans.

It was built by a fellow down the road (just google for JoeCNC if you’re curious), he’s got quite a following on cnczone.com.

It’s pretty solid, built from 8020 channel aluminum and steel superstrut. It’s big.. the footprint is about 7 foot square. It’s got about 5” of vertical travel, and about 4 feet on the X and Y axis. There are 4 stepper motors total, 2 of them are slaved together to drive the Y axis.

The theory is that you design something using Vcarve pro or other software. This software also generates tool paths which are transmitted via serial connection to a motor controller.

I don’t have a clue how to make it work yet :-0, but it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Here’s a couple of pics…
