Just think of all that extra cash you’ll have for tools…

Jim,

You and your son have my total support. Quitting this habit is difficult but if anyone is up to the challenge I am sure that you are. You both will be in my thoughts.

jim, congrats on the not smoking. i quit and i can tell you that you never get over wanting a cig.
but youjust dont get one.

and never eat or anything to replace it. only makes you want a cig more.

also cut out all sugar. and watch what you eat. cause you will only want one more.

good luck.

I stopped 13 years ago, and I know you can also! Nothing like a loved one to properly motivate you. Whittle yourself a fake cigarette to handle if you need it. Cold turkey is the only way to go! Good Luck!

GO JIM! Support is the big thing. I hate to hear about your health problems. For what its worth my father was in the same boat as you. His lungs were so bad, I can remember quite well hearing my dad wheeze when he exhailed as he slept. It kept me up at night. After a heartattack he quit cold turkey and he was smoke free till he passed on years later. Keep up the good work. YOU CAN DO THIS. Think TOOLS, TOOLS, and SUPPLIES.

Best of luck, Jim…this weekend is four years for me. It’s tough, but when you beat this, you know that you can do anything you set your mind to do.

Keep the faith…you can do it!

The 31st of july 2008 will be 1 year for me, I tried many times this time I quite. I still want one every now and then, the urge last about as long as it takes to say a “cig would be good right now” or I slap my shirt pocket. I breath better smell thing I hadn’t for a long time and food taste better.

I used the pill Chantix and I do not recommend it. I took it for four weeks and it made me wacky, could not concentrate and my thought precess was messed up. Some people take it for twelve weeks.

I agree with cutting out sugar, I was told that i was borderline diabetic, when I have sugar the urge is greater.

Good luck I feel so much better, but I liked smoking.

All addictions boil down to stress. So when you feel stressed out take a break, do something good to yourself. Meditate, pray, call someone, exercise, take a walk, take a shower, eat something crunchy, like an apple or a carrot, Join a 12 step group, all these things can help you deal with stress and defocus you from wanting a butt. God Bless buddy I’ll pray for you, it sounds like your son wants you around for a while longer. Your friend.

Hi Jim,

I’ve had similar experience as yours. My father in law smoked from the time he was a teenager until the day before he died. He lived with emphasema for the last ten years of his life and lung cancer for the last two. My mother in law was lucky because she quit shortly after she buried her husband. She is battling the effects of emphasema now. She is on medications, oxygen, and in and out of the hospital every month it seems. I smoked for thirty five years before I quit. I was lucky. I had a bad chest cold that was more severe than a non-smoker would have had. I ran a very high fever and could just barely feed myself and go to the bathroom for three days. When I woke up, I hadn’t had a cig for two days and I didn’t have any desire for one. I haven’t smoked since.

The sad part of the story is I had to listen to my two daughters beg me to quit smoking for the last five years and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t quit. My wife had put up with the smoke for eighteen years before I quit. She has emphasema now. I don’t know if I’m responsible for that or not but I feel the guilt just the same. I pray that my children have no desire to smoke because of the bad example I set for them.

As for your struggle to quit, I’ll just say this. It’s probably too late to benefit from quitting yourself. You could still help others though. If your son actually quits because of the example you set, his life could be changed alltogether. I quit about two years ago and now I can’t even compare my lung health to before. I’m fifty one and I expect that the ill effects from smoking will fade away completely. The same could happen for your son and those that he inspires.

Forget the cigarettes and work the wood,
Jim

Way to go Jim!!!
It has been 7 and a half years since I quit. I had a little help in quitting, a heart attack and 6 bypasses. Smoking really does a number on your heart, in 8 days I will be having my 5th heart procedure. Smoking aint worth it but its hard to quit,
Google “quitkeeper”, it is a free program that you download to keep track of how much money you save, how many cigs you dont smoke, the amt of time since your last smoke, etc.
Good luck to you.

I’m proud of you Jim, & I hope you, and your Son are successful in this venture together.

People don’t believe me when I tell them I quit smoking 69 years ago,

when I was only 7 years old. It was really a hard thing to do, because I was hooked.

I had a real incentive though, my 18 year old cousin who smoked himself,

told me he’d beat the tar out of me if he ever caught me again.

I don’t think I’d have quit if my Dad had caught me, because he was a smoker.

I took my corncob pipe, & put it on the railroad tracks to destroy it.

Quitting smoking was one of the greatest accomplishments in my life, & I’ve always been proud of it

Good luck Jim. It’s a tough road to quit cold turkey, but your lungs will thank you for it! My mom passed away when I was 7 from lung cancer from smoking…she was only 40. I swore I would never smoke..and I have never even put a cigarette to my lips.

My prayers are with you Sir. What you are doing is very commendable… it’s a hard thing to quit. Find a new source of strength and focus on it. Congrats…. !!
