I'm a relatively new victim of the wood bug. I got bitten at Woodcraft class in early '06. Since then there has been a slow, but steady accumulation of tools. TLOML aided and abetted when she bought a 30-year old spinning wheel and asked if I could do anything with the finish.
This all picked up since June '08 when I took a pen turning class. I'm almost embarrassed to admit I had a Jet 1014 within the next 24-hours. It was too good a deal to pass up! I got almost everything I needed to get started: drillpress, centering clamp, lathe, 2 chisel sets, a box of pen kits, and a big bag of blanks.
"Everything you need to get started" in a CL advertisement does not mean exactly that. It means "this is the stuff I used to use and I'm pretty sure it's all here."
Within the next 2-3 weeks I realized why people buy new tools. No 3 trips to the store to find the right key for the drill press chuck. No special order MT2 reamer to clean up the head stock so the mandrill can be inserted and removed without brute force. A new 7mm drill bit after discovering 1/4" is too small and 9/32" is too big. My Nova Midi chuck should be here early next week.
But, I have turned a couple of gorgeous pens. I just need to convince my dog that these are Daddy's pens, not Kokuma's chewing sticks...
