LumberJocks

Dear Diary

My blogging is more like a diary. It is about my personal woodworking journey. The Western Design Conference is just a week away and my brain is kicking into high gear. I’ve been offline for a week and a half so I’ve just been trying to catch up here at Lumberjocks. Reading some good stuff about marketing, websites, shows, etc. The range of professional experience is very educational. I have to admit I expected some direct response from a web site, but haven’t got a bite. Well I am suppose to be getting a few million dollars from some young lady in South Africa and this cream that is suppose to… never mind. My experience with galleries is that the furniture could sit for years before being sold. Then every thing could sell in a month. Time will tell with the web site. I’m just glad I didn’t spend thousands. I don’t know how many times I was told all I needed was a web site to “get my stuff out there”. Speaking of thousands of dollars this Western Design Conference has my fear level on the rise. Getting my stuff out there! What a chore. Thousands of dollars that could have done the addition to my shop and furnished it with tools. What was I thinking? I’ll tell you. Ever since I saw Ralph Kylloe’s books. I wanted to build beautiful rustic furniture. They showed a level of craftsmanship and artistic ability I could only dream of. Dream I did. To build at this level I knew I had to play with the big boys and in my part of the world they played at the Western Design Conference. So my fellow Jocks I could use your prayers. The day is just a week away. You folk here get a lot of the credit. You have provided me with a vast amount of inspiration. I know it would have been too easy to just get wrapped up in cabinet work and let another year slip by. Week by week I would see some project posted that kept my creative spark alive. Don’t expect a well written account of my trip like you got from Mark. I usually forget to take photos. But I will take the spirit of Lumberjocks with me. Thank God that is all I will need.

regardless of the immediate payoffs, I know that this will be worth it for you! Your designs, your skills, and your personal style are magnificent and your work will be known as “a Dennis Mitchell – wow!” :)

I’lll be sending good thoughts for you.

Hi Dennis;
—-just one step followed by a next step and one day at a time….

Ha!....have you stopped sleeping yet because of last minute finitude? And then comes opening day and in you walk, the master of your show and a calmness settles….for once again you know that you are in control….

Thank you and I know you can!..
GODSPEED,
Frank

One of the things that always strikes me about artists or craftsman that are successful is that for many it tends to happen quickly. They could be struggling along for years with little recognition and then suddenly their work is the hottest thing there is. Your work is ready Dennis. It just needs to be found.

Dennis,

Regardless of the out come of the design project you are truly a gifted artist whom I admire.

With you, the essence of greatness is not having to be.

You are a inspiration to many, including me.

You will be rewarded in due time.

Keep the faith.

Dennis, our hopes, dreams and prayers go with you. I wanted to come over and spend a day but Carleen says we need the money for other projects. So, Vicariously at least , I’ll be there with you. God Speed my friend. Like Bob Babcock said,”He worked his tail off for thirty years and was and over-night success”.

After looking at your web site and the quality you have on display there, I think the next logical step is the WDC. Go forth and conquer, your time is now, you are ready, just take a deep breath and do it!

I will put a word in for you just in case!

Dennis, I’ve seen your work come along for quite some time now if anyone is a professional it’s you my friend. I don’t think you have anything to worry about, but I know how you feel, I’ll pray for you anyway. You can’t compare yourself to Mark, Maloof, Nagashima, Green and Green whoever. We’ll be talking about the Dennis Mitchell style of woodworking. Remember buddy,” the only person you have to please, is the man in the mirror”. You’ve done some wonderous work that I’ve witnessed. You did’nt copy a soul, it came from you. Go get em. I know I’m proud to know you. God go with you, mike.
