Profile:
Self-Employed, professsional woodworker, specializing in Commissioned Art Furniture, Historical Crafts, Scrimshaw, Powder Horns, Custom Knives, Flutes, Walking Canes and Walking Sticks, Carving, Artisan Hat Making Tools, Paleo-Art pieces, and an occasional sculpture piece, lathe turned piece, or something else unique.

I was taught woodworking by my father, a master furniture and clock builder, and former woodshop teacher. Also, I was trained by High School Wood Shop (a dying entity) with Mr. Ernie Hiekes who made each day make sense, and encouraged us to dream and explore the craft.

I have been aided in my work by David Mark's DIY Woodworks t.v. show, Norm Abrams New Yankee Workshop t.v. show, and Marc Adam's Sculptured Rocking Chair class, as well as Marc Adam's video library.

I have also studied Sam Maloof's autobiography, George Nakashima's book "The Soul of a Tree", and James Krenov's "The Impractical Cabinetmaker."

Recently, I was given Glen D. Huey's DVD on "The Woodworker's Edge: Chippendale Small Chest," by Mr. Huey for my 2nd place entry in the Summer 2006 Lumberjocks contest. I would highly recommend this DVD, as it explains how to do a lot of period traditional joinery that I have not known how to do before. My work will surely include these details in the future, and I recommend the video.

In the past I remember some one telling us about a place where we can sell our products for free. Can anyone help me find where I can sell. I would like to get something started to where I can sell some of my works. Thank You Jim Earl

Hey Jim: I have a lot to say about selling work, and how the internet can help, or mislead. I will put my thoughts together after the Christmas rush next week when I have the time to give the effort it needs.

Thanks for asking,
Mark

Mark,

I admire your courage to become self employed. The first time I arrived at this site I was basically introduced to the Lumber Jocks through your interview for winning the winter contest. Reading about your commitment to Christ and your family was inspiring.

At work, I often daydream about woodworking as a profession. I feel drained at the end of the day dealing with the toils of the corporate world. Maybe after I get my wife’s and my college loans paid off I’ll feel more confident about that endeavor but we’ll see. I’m sure that self-employment isn’t always glamorous but being home with my family, doing what I love, and allowing my wife to continue to stay home with the kids would be glamorous enough.

Thank you for sharing your faith, thoughts, and projects.

Mark,

You are an inspiration to those of us who long to use the gifts and talents God has given us to use our creative minds and hands to recreate the beauty of His creation as He reveals it to us. My talents in working wood was lost for many years for reasons that need not be shared here. But now, as I have returned to the passion of my youth, God is restoring those talents and I am learning so much. I have a lot to learn when it comes to building furniture but I also have lots of time to spend in the shop. Thank you again for being here and sharing your talents and gifts in the wood shop. I hope to learn much more from you and others here at Lumberjocks

Jeff

Mark I have went thru all your projects as well as your web site, I really admire your work, I wish I were more eloquent, but a simple thank you seems fitting.
