Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne, England.
Website:

I retired at the end of 2006 - I'd been working as a part time tutor for the previous 3 years.
I manage to spend about 20 hours a week woodworking.
My first love is making decorative boxes, and I also like turning. During 2007 I've taken up woodcarving and its going to take a while before I become anywhere near a competent carver.

Hi everyone – thanks for all the words of welcome.
One enquiry was about the pivot details.
The pivots are made from African blackwood which I turn myself – I finish them at 4 mm which is as large as I dare go bearing in mind that the lid is 10mm thick – just enough room for some error in drilling. I use the skew for turning the pivots – this leaves a burnished finish that needs no sanding. I make lengths of about 2 1/2 inches long – any longer the timber flexes under the pressure from the skew and I can’t control the diameter.
The back of the lid, at the top, is rounded on the router table. I use a 9mm roundover bit – this give clearance for the lid to open without jamming against the back of the box. I drill the hole for the pivot 9mm forward from the back edge of the lid and it just allows the lid to open beyond the 90 degrees. I arrived at this on my third box using this type of lid after some trial and error on boxes 1 and 2.
Hope the above helps – if you need further details let me know and I’ll try to help.

Welcome to Lumberjocks. The projects are an inspiration, the information is priceless and the people are supportive. The only problem is, the site can get addictive.
