October 2005 my workshop suffered a bit of a mishap. I’m not sure how much news about New England gets around to other workshops, but last October we got 10.5” of rain one Saturday. We were woken up Sunday morning at 4:30am to the fire rescue trucks sounding their sirens to wake people up as we were getting some flooding. Heading down in the basement, I found about 6” of water down there. By 3:00pm, when we were told to evacuate, there was 4.5’ (yes that’s feet) of water in my workshop basement.
Now before you begin to wipe the tears of hearing that my workshop was flooded, let me explain that my nephew and father-in-law helped me remove all of my tools projects and lumber before they were comsumed by the flood waters. I lost a couple of hand tools including my ROS and my fathers belt sander among some others.
That is the desctiption of the first picture.
Now, I’ll skip up to today. I’ve got my workbench pushed up to the far wall and have setup my turning station there. I’ve got my Jet mini, bench drill-press and bench grinder there.
One wall is consumed with the oil tank and shelves for lumber. I’ve got my jointer setup near my turning station. And the tablesaw is located across the room from the turning station over near the lumber racks.
Across from the washer and dryer (not shown) is a table that I have been using for finishing and laying out lumber for grain and color matching.
I should also point out that at 5’8” I don’t have much trouble walking around with the exception of a few low hanging water pipes. Oh and the rather ironic part of the flooding last October is that I was currently working (and had to rescue) on a couple of Adirondack chairs that I had donated to raise money for the flood victims in Louisiana!
And I’m not too proud to say that yes, I did clean up a bit before snapping these pictures tonight!

I wasn’t out of commision for long. It took a couple weeks to get things dried and cleaned up, but I had those chairs to finish!

my shop was only out of commision for a few weeks. I try and look at the bright side, it finally got that cleaning that it really needed!
I’ve been able to keep the whole situation in perspective, I had a co-worker whose father-in-law was swept away in the floods and I have several customers in the New Orleans area. My bit of water was a hassle, but it could have been much worse.

yeah that’s the 6” Ridgid jointer. A birthday present for my self a couple years ago. I do like it. The only complaint I have is that while I got it from Home Depot, they don’t stock replacement blades… and I could really use another set! Dang that staple in that board!
I’ve been very happy with the Ridgid tools I’ve got. I also have their Thickness planer and I’ve got my eye on the Ridgid plunge router.

I added a Ridgid thickness planer back around Christmas time, not much room left for anymore tools! Need to start building some more stuff though!
