Sidetable #2: Wobble/Flex

« Part 1: Sketchup Renderings Part 2 of Sidetable series Part 3: Almost there »

The table is coming together nicely, glued the base together last night, and started finishing the top. The only issue I’m having is that it’s a bit on the delicate side; the thin rails that have the epoxied metal dowels in them allow the legs to flex when pushed. Wondering if I can make it a bit more solid by gluing a piece to the inside of the thin rails, between the two long stretchers. I’ll see what it’s like after the glue has cured when I get home tonight and make the call then (and post some pics). Even as is it will be fine for its intended purpose of looking nice while supporting my whisky glass :)

Hello Damian
For the wobble, I agree with putting a backup strip of wood to control the wobble. When I made the wenge and yellow heart coffee table the wenge for the sides was 1/2 inch stock. To increase the strength and stability I glued a 1/2 inch by 1 inch strip of mahogany to the backside of the stretchers.

Table looks cool.
when do you think it will be done ?

I’m going to do that tomorrow Dan, left some spots unfinished so I can glue it in, but I was impatient to get some finish on and post some pics :)

Should have all the finish on by the weekend, at which point I’ll take some nice pics and post to the project page (which is second only to putting that first coat of finish on as the highlight of my projects :)
