Hello Daltons,

Let me welcome you to LJs. I hope that you will find this to be an exciting and rewarding element of your woodworking adventure.

Thanks for all the welcoming comments. I have read some of the conversations over the last year or so and seems like an interesting site. Actually I am not a woodworker but I do some designing and have a woodworker that executes my designs. I am really an antique dealer that specializes in Gustav Stickley and the furniture, fine art and decoratives from the Arts and Crafts Period. I am a on the board of trustees at Craftsman Farms in NJ and am president of the Arts and Crafts Society of Central New York. I deal with many aspects of furniture daily and thought that I could learn a great deal from people that actually hand make their own furniture. There is spirit in those that do that’s hard to understand unless it’s experienced. Hopefully you are creating what our children’s children will be collecting in the future. Keep up the great work.

Welcome to the LJ community, I don’t think that you have to be a woodworker to benefit.

I think that with your experience, we would have a lot to gain if you are willing to share.

While working in Ohio, my wife and I took a side trip up to your neck of the woods. We visited the RoyCrofters Campus, some Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Byrdcliffe Colony exhibit at Cornell. Oh, I can’t forget the MooseWood restaurant, my wife’s artistic medium is food.

Your area is so rich with the history of what we do, you are very lucky to be there. I hope you share some of your perspective.

I would be happy to share. We always welcome woodworkers in the gallery. I have aprox 60 pieces of Gustav Stickley furniture and 20 or 30 pieces by other makers including L&JG Stickley, Rohlfs, Young, Harden, Stickley Bros. etc.
I had a couple in this weekend from Atlanta that were measuring and photographing for future projects.
I have also helped with finishing advice. I have seen some pretty nice woodworking projects with some pretty bad finishes. Nothing is worse than a great piece with a bad finish. Because I deal in period pieces I am constantly looking at finish conditions and making decisions on conservation and restoration. This info translates to new projects nicely.
I am really sold on cut shellac finishes with a coat of wax which was a traditional method.
I would love to hear some other opinions on old finishes on mission oak furniture.

I think a light history lesson or discerning the differences in the manufacturers that are covered under the blanket term Arts & Crafts or Mission would be interesting.
