The Mitersaw Bench #1: The design

You are very lucky to have that recess in the wall in the right spot. I struggled with a design that would let me put my slider against the wall, but never came up with a solution. I guess I’ll just have mine on a mobile cart.

My saw is a 12” sliding Dewalt. It measures 44” from farthest back to farthest forward handle. That is just too wide for a bench.

checkout wood magazine.com in the project plans , they have a mitersaw dust collection frame. I tried it it works very well to capture 75% or more of the dust&chips that the mitersaw will not throw into the dc chute. Good luck.

That is a great design – so far. The “Big Gulp” catcher that you have for your saw will function much better from the top. I think that some of the dust will get into it. Have you thought about building some sort of box from the saw’s output port to the Big Gulp? That would force pretty much all of the dust into the DC system and not all around the shop. Just a suggestion.

Great post!!! I think you have the right idea with your Big Gulp catcher. it seems to me that a bunch of dust seems to fall “out the Bottom” of the saw. Imagine you are going to put a hole in the surface of the stand the size of the big gulp, that’s what I plan doing with my bench.

DocK, I actually have the plan and the video somewhere… but honestly I’ve watched it enough times that I pretty much know in my head how it all went together, so this one I am building from scratch. I will take photos and on occasion throw up some sizes for you guys, though I am building it to fit my space specifically, so its probably going to sit a bit high, but its going to be sweet when its done.

Also I will look into the kreg measuring system, the Incra one is sweet, and it would work with my incra stop that I already have, but its a bit pricy, and I would like to keep costs down if I could…

The big gulp will be screwed to the base the saw will sit on, and I will cut the opening to be about the same size as the gulper. Though I don’t know how well it will work, I may have to build a box over the saw at some point.
