Washington State LJ Summer Picnic

Blog entry by chamoruboy posted 176 days ago 284 reads 0 times favorited 21 comments Add to Favorites

I would like to plan/host a Summer picnic for Washington LJs to get together and shoot the breeze about our hobby/passion for woodworking. I’ve got a couple folks who have already said they are definitely in. So if you are a Washington LJ or if you will be in the Seattle area at the right time this summer and would like to participate, the more the merrier.

I will take suggestions for the date so that we can work as best we can around any schedule conflicts.

Hope to hear from you soon!

pete

Sounds like fun. So far the only time that will not work me is July 13 – 18. I’m in the Bothell/Mill Creek area, I’m open as far a locations go.

It would be fun to get together. I live in Edmonds and can pretty much work my schedule. Once you are able to lock in a date, let us know.

I’ll add this to the eMag. Let me know if you decide on a time frame.

Thanks Debbie!

Why don’t we tentatively plan for a Saturday in June, either the 14th or the 21st. We can adjust that that to another month if necessary but if we at least throw out the two dates, maybe we can garner preferences as to which date works best, and we can start planning around that date. I live next to a park so we can have the picnic there or in my back yard is also another option. In any event there is lots of parking. I live in Lynnwood which is pretty central to most the Washington Lumber Jocks that I know of.

I suggest a “show and tell” at the picnic where each LJ brings a small project that he or she really likes and want so share. Also, we can create a dual purpose for the event and ask for a small donation of a toy that will benefit Child Haven – a Seattle based charity for women and children that are victims of violence and or drug addiction. Are there any other suggestions for activities at the picnic?

So far June looks open for me, although that’s 6 months out. I try and keep things open for June.

I’m up for it! Thanks for initiating this Pete…

The 21st of June looks better for me at this point!

I’m thinking there are a few more local LJs, so if we each forward this info to ones that we can think of we may be able to get a pretty good turnout.

Currently, June is open for me. However, I have a daughter graduating from HS mid-June which will likely occupy some time with family coming into town. Almost three down, one to go. Oh wait, college, never mind.

Great – it seems everyones is warming up to the idea of the picnic. The tentative date idea seems to be working well too. Lets narrow it down to the 21st of June then since CutNRun will be pre-occupied in Mid June, unless he indicates that the 14th actually works better than the 21st for him.

This was a good feeler and hopefully we’ll get even more interest. I believe an announcement in the E-Mag will help get broader coverage. When we get closer to June we can start locking in some of the details for the picnic but in the meantime if there are any suggestions for activities or anything else in relation to the picnic then post them here!

So far June 21st sounds good to me. I like the activities you’ve suggested so far. Of course the rain doesn’t usually stop here until July 5th, you know. Well, if the 5th of July falls on a Sunday, make that the 6th.

As a brand new member of LJ I thank you for including me in the family! Right now, either of the two weekends in June look good for me. I live in Vancouver, but am very willing to make a weekend trip to the Seattle area.

It’ll be on the 21st of June in Lynnwood, WA. As the date gets closer the coordination will begin.

Sounds like you’ll have to move them back, or at least to another location, later.

If it helps, when I have to move something heavy I use a large tripod and a come-a-long for a lift. I have 3 16’ 4×4’s that I keep for this purpose. One has a ~60 degree angle cut on the end and all have a 3/4” hole in one end through which I put a piece of pipe, rebar, or whatever’s handy at the time. I’ll place the tripod off center of the object, hoist it up and set it down 3-4 feet away while pushing sideways. It can be tedious and somewhat slow, but it sure saves the back. I’ve moved 3/4 ton+ rocks this way. For your purposes you probably don’t need a tripod that big but the taller it is, the further you can move the object each time.
