I got hooked on saw dust when I was 13 in shop class. Later in my teens I made a few bucks here and there building big custom fit speaker boxs for my buddies cars.
I became a professional by accident. I was 20 and working at KFC a friend was working at a library furniture outfit and told me they needed help. I started out making tabletops and moved on to case work before we parted ways. Next I put in time at a fine furniture factory, but that was all production work so once again I moved on. The past seven years I've been a cabinet maker with an AWI certified company.
I get to a variety of work ranging from residential kitchens and librarys to judges benches and court rooms to hotel paneling and ballrooms.
The thing that sucks about getting paid to do woodwork is by the time you get done at work you don't feel like doing anything at home.
The nice thing is I can go in on the weekend and use the shop for my own stuff so I don't have to kick out big bucks for machinery and equipment.
The nicest thing is the great big boxes of scrap wood that are there for the taking. Lots of free turning blocks.
