Hi all.

My name is Cameron and i am thirteen years old.

I first discoverd this website whilst working in school. I was immediatly taken by all the lovely work everyone had created. So i thought to myself, why not have a go. I live in Aberdeen, it's also called the granite city because the majority of the buildings are made of granite. In my opinion granite is dull and cold, and can rarley be made into anything but brickwork. With my experiance of seeing cold grey buildings everytime i draw the cuirtans in the morning, i find it simple to see something beautiful. So when i saw this site, it opend my eyes, and shown me what wood can really be transformed into!

I am not expecting my projects to be masterpeices, but i garuntee, they will look nicer than all the old granite buildings outside my window!

Cam,

One thing you might want to consider, as you begin your journey in woodworking, is taking advantage of the materials most readily available to you. While you might be sick of the drab and boring grey granite you see every morning, there is other stone native to Scotland you should not discount. For example, Iona Marble has great character and would be a great compliment to a project in wood.

Here it is used as the cab in the pommel of a sgian dubh (made by a guy in Loch Ness, Scotland, Rab Gordon).

When I made a presentation box for a Rab Gordon sgian dubh that had a red jasper cab set in the pommel, I decided to carry that theme into the box, as well, and set a red jasper cab into the lid of the box.

It is this type of approach that can help turn a work of wood into a work of art.

Good luck on your path – may it be long and unending.
