while doing a dry fit to take measurements for drawers and drawer guides disaster struck. After the measurements were taken and I was in the process of disasembling the chest I lost control of some of the parts. the back of the chest fell to its death and broke in two at the tounge and grove joint. this has stopped the next step of the project in its tracks. Now I must fix this problem before I continue. the next intery will be called the reasurection. Heers some pics.

building a tool chest #1: building a tool chest part 1

Ever since visiting the Gerstner tool chest web site Ive wanted to build a chest like the ones they sell. A few months ago I was able to salvage some cherry from a dumpster. I thought I would use this wood to build my chest. I hope to document as well as I can the building process. I have taken some pics of what I have so far. In part one of this series I will show some pics of the project in progress. Any helpfull hints would be appreciated.

A testament to finger joints

Below are some pics of a tool box that I made a couple of years back. The wood is alder. This tool box was built to hold a large amount of electrical tools. One day when I was working on top of a high lift the box rolled off of the platform and droped about 10 feet onto a concreet floor. I expected to find it in pieces with 30 pounds of tools scattered about. What I found was an intact tool box with only a couple of cracks in the lid. Wow I thought, finger joints sure are strong. I sanded it down and glued the cracks and clamped. You can still see two cracks, one on the back top right corner and one on the top of the lid. I was going to post this under projects but i didnt want to show off the obvious dovetail mistake on the drawers. (the tails and pins are backwards)

2008 LJ challenge project finally completed

At last my breadbox is done. the project was entered in both catigories. It is made from one 8’ cherry 2×4. the sides are 3/8s thick, the bottom, top, and back are 1/4 inch thick. the bottom to the knife storage is also 1/4 inch thick. the tambour door is 21 slats 5/8s wide by 3/16 thick with a 30 degree bevel on both edges of each slat. I wanted to use cloth to hold the slats together but figured it was clasified as another building material. instead I used 40 small hinges and a hot glue gun. The top of the Knofe holder can be used to slice bread on.

after crosscutting and ripping my 2×4 into many many pieces it was time for glueup. because this 2×4 is reclaimed it had a previous finish on the edges. I glued the boards together and later came back to remove glue lines with a card scraper before unclamping. after unclamping the glued up boards fell apart. glue wont stick to finished materials. I already knew this but in my rush to complete the project it was overlooked. Out comes the thinner and the scraper to remove the finish and the glue. Now i had to reglue. the point is , if i wasnt in such a rush i would probably be further along. Instead I had to do the same work twice.
hereder="0" alt="Photobucket">"Photobucket"> are some parts to the project.
