2008 LJ challenge project finally completed

Bryan, this is a really nice piece. I admire your perseverance in using the hinges for your tambour door. That certainly was innovative. I can say without a doubt that I would not have had the patience to do this. Obviously this was an excellent example of “thinking outside the box”.

Thanks Bryan, I had to work fast on this project with no mistakes, I only started on this 4 days ago. The only setback was haveing 2 upper back teeth pulled(no fun). The hinges do take patience.

I have to be honest, I’m impressed how you were able to enter both contest with the same project, and it came out so well. Of course, I wish I could get cherry 2×4’s around here ;)

Its not easy to get cherry 2×4s heer ither. I just got lucky . It was going to go in a dumpster untill i gave it a detour to my car.

And here I thought you “made” the 2×4 to start with. Now who out there is making such things, and where is their dumpster? (you know, in case I’m in the neighborhood). Impressed you built the roll top with all those hinges. I’d probably have used canvas or something.

Scott, I wanted to use canvas but figured it would not be allowed because it was a type of building material. there is a similar project in my past projects using canvas

Great project. It is a keeper, too. After the contest is over you could replace the hinges with canvas for the tambour.

Do you need to wax the tambour door to help the slats open and close?
– have not had a whirl at this kinda door, but may soon with my Fathers new kitchen…

If you keep your finish out of the tambour grove it should slide effortlessly given enough clearence. the slats are 3/16 thick, the grove they run in 1s 1/4’. If you let finish into the grove it would be a good idea to use beeswax.
