I have to start by telling you that The “shop” is an offspring of our maintenance area in our warehouse.
We need an area to stage and repair all manner of wear and tear for 8 bathrooms , 8 furnaces, drains ,tile , rugs, painting, baseboards doors etc to keep our 10,000 sq ft warehouse up to snuff.
The basics where there and all I needed was an excuse to add this or that rather than hire the job out. By the way, up here you cannot get trades people so a lot is left on the building owners lap. We have an oil field group that pays truck drivers $1000.00 per day to drive rig trucks so goodbye trades people.
Back to my story.
I tried this year to get a foundation poured in my backyard for a shop of my own but could not get concrete until next spring.
The mess you are about to revue is a bunch of tools huddled near electrical outlets waiting to be set into a shop layout.
I just hope Ms. Debbie will cut me some slack her and give me a temporary pass.
This shot is of the north end of the space (20×25 feet)
You can see the end of my bench and the overhead rack I use for my small hand clamps. Beyond this the 1/2 hp drill press with built in/on cabinet to house most of the bits I use . Next to it the Delta lathe and on the other side buried today in cauls the radial arm saw ( My dado machine)
On the other facing area you see my miter saw station with after market laser attachment.
Seems to work just great so far.
Here’s a better shot of the lathe and showing my router table with the Lee Valley top inserted in the top .
This is my “Mobile crash cart” housing all my turning tools, my wood chisels and my vacuum pump for the lathe and veneering.
Down on the main floor I have clustered my 18” band saw, my table saw, my lunch box planer, my metal band saw and two 1 hp dust collectors to deal with the chunks while I use a shop vac for the fine stuff.

That stick is just a practice stick that I left on from last using the lathe
I try to practice at least once a week with one or more tools and keep a feel for the tools and the wood between actual turnings. ( just a few minutes at a time)
In that case, I was practicing with a skew/gouge I made in an other project.
On a good day when the wood smiles at me I can almost get a surface that needs no sanding or very little.

Hello, I am a new member from Sherwood Park. (WoodChucker) I’m just starting up my shop and I have been looking for a good hardwood supplier in the Edmonton area and have been unable to find one. (besides Windsor Plywood). I’m hoping to find good 1/4 and rift sawn hardwoods from 4/4 and up.
Your input would be greatly appreciated.

The other local spot for hardwoods is Channin woods .
You have to phone them to see if they are open on Saturdays.

Hi Bob,
This post just came up on my list. You have a nice shop here. It does look a little cramped, especially for a big project, but I could work in there. You have a nice set of tools.

I can’t bend over half the time and going past the counters is a trial.
It’s a temporary place as I am building a new shop this summer.
It just kind of exploded over the last five years as I accumulated stuff for the new place.
I can hardly wait.

You might want to consider a construction blog as you go. I find these to be an interesting post.
