Well I'm an early retired tool maker due to health reasons but I'm still getting by. Have a new grand daughter to keep us busy, but she has cut into my time in my shop. Most of my projects are for family but I have done some for money for people who almost begged me to make what they wanted, I really don't like doing it for money and I'd give away what I make for free if I could afford it. We have a 19 yr old son who followed my footsteps into the Marine Corp, last year his unit was in Iraq now it looks like they will be deployed again this summer but they are going out on a naval battle group to the Med.
My shop is in my basement because of the constant temperature it stays being below grade, stays cool in the summer and doesn't take much to heat in the winter. It's fairly dry so humidity isn't a problem for my tools or my wood. Most of my tools are on wheels to get in and out of where I like to use them, the other area is a little bigger but I use that for wood storage, assy, some machines permanently stationed like my miter saw station, mortise machine and a 10" drill press, bench grinder and a wood lathe. In my main work area I keep a small television mostly for the noise of the voices on TV, all my hand tools are in there too hanging on the walls. I would like to section off an area to make a finishing room so I could do more spray finishing but that'll have to wait for the next remodel all of us woodworkers do to our shops on a continuous basis. Most of what I make is furniture pieces and my favorite wood to work with is red oak. thats all for now.
