My workshop is a work in progress. I read quite a bit before arriving at this layout. This was the first year that I got serious about woodworking. After taking over 1/2 of our 2 car garage I was able to set up my first shop. Since I have to share the other half with my wife’s car I needed the ability to move things around. Pretty much everything is on casters with the exception of my band saw. I build mostly tables and smaller casegoods so I have tried to set up my shop accordingly. From the pictures you can see my stance on clutter and sawdust…I hate and avoid both as much as possible.
Everything is centered around the placement of the table saw as it takes center stage. I have a shopmade production bench that does triple duty as the TS runoff and tool storage with a power source. The production bench along with my mobile planer stand (not pictured) are made as cheaply and quickly as possible (MDF). I currently have 2 layers of 2’x4’ birch shop ply as my top. I hopefully will replace with solid maple and add a vise at some point as I seem to do most of my work here vs. the 2’x8’ workbench behind it. At some point I need to add a true cabinet makers bench either of solid maple or beech. I keep my jointer and planer parked in front of the TS when not in use. I simply roll either out and attach my 4” hose to them and I am in business. For right now I have clustered my bandsaw to the right of my TS and it seems to work fine for now.
As far as keeping sawdust down to a minimum I have a two prong approach. I use a dust collector along with a air filtration system to help take out any residual airborne wood particles.
For those of you who like lists here are my highlights:
Jet Air Filtration System AFS 1000B
Delta 1hp Dust Collector AP400
Grizzly 14” Band Saw G0555X with 6”riser
Grizzly 6” Jointer G0604
Delta 13” Planer 22-580
Delta 10” 1.5hp Table Saw Left Tilt Contractor Saw 36-979 with cast iron wings and Biesemeyer fence
Delta 17” Laser Drill Press 17 959L
Hitachi 10” Compound Miter Saw C-10FC2
Porter Cable 895 Router Kit
Porter Cable 557 Biscuit Joiner
Porter Cable 2600 2 hp 6 gal. Pancake air compressor
WoodTek 1 hp bench top Mortiser
Kreg K3 Master System
Various other small power tools
Various hand tools: Chisles, planes, card sraper (I love my card scraper) etc.
Still Needs (wish list)
a cabinet makers bench (either make it myself or purchase one)
Jet 18”-36” open end drum sander
Vaccum Press & Table
More storage more space

Hey BFD,
Cool shop,
I think I figured out what happens to the dust and clutter at your place. It moves over to mine during the “Dead Of Night” That must be why yours is so neat and mine always looks like a disaster area.

Great shop!
I have about the same amount of space available to work in and have been wondering how I could possibly get all of the tools squeezed inside. Your shop gives me new ideas on how I can situate tools within my own shop. Thanks for the inspiration!

Nice shop BFD. Lots of great tools and decent space.
I used to live in Orangevale, and liked the Folsom area.

Nice! Don’t fall victim to the “filling every bit of space with tools.” You have a nice shop with a great amount of space to work in.

Hi BDF
Great looking shop! Your my kind of guy! A place for everything and everything in its place. I lived in Lemoore, CA. for five years and my daughter lives in Hanford.

Nice shop. When I saw the rail sticking out from your table saw I thought of the time that I had a similar set up. I still have that dent in the side of the car door.

I like the wide open space. It’s almost like working outside..only you’re not ;) A clean shop just says ‘get busy time’, doesn’t it?

You’re alot more creative than I am… I have a good deal of space and no idea how to lay things out efficiently. Not for lack of reading and looking at examples… Oh well, maybe I”ll learn something from you….
Nice job!!

Hi BFD,
You have a nice shop space in which to work. And you have a nice set of tools to play with as well. It is very organized too.
Thanks for the shop tour. I really appreciated visiting with you.
