The joys of no DSL connection

Blog entry by Bill posted 424 days ago 302 reads 0 times favorited 12 comments Add to Favorites

I have not been online much lately, but not for lack of desire. I have been spending time building a potting table for a customer. Even with that, I still have had a few minutes to look online. The main problem has been the lack of DSL connection. Last Monday, my DSL modem decided to give up the ghost. I called AT&T, and after diagnosing the modem, determined it was dead. I ordered a new modem, which was supposed to be here in 48 hours.

Alas, I should have known, that was to optimistic. One week has gone by, and the modem has not arrived yet. I called about it, and found out the warehouse is behind on shipments. So, I have been checking email and such during lunch.

So, I have not forgotten all of you. I am just backlogged. Soon I will be back commenting again. Until then, I will suffer through my Lumberjock withdrawals knowing they will be ending soon.

I talked to AT&T/SBC last week about the new price on my DSL this past month. (My year contract is up) I reminded them about Verizon’s new DSL plan and their low cost. They (SBC) told me that the “newer” price of my DSL would remain as the “older price” and would not go up for another year.

Another reason to have a LumberJocks PARTY, when Bill gets back on line!!!

Technology is wonderful when it works. The modem should be here soon (so they say).

Technology is wonderful when it works. You said it, Brother!! I live out in the country, on ten acres, in the woods. The technology stops at the intersection of my road and another farm road. Everyone down my road (about 13 houses over five miles) is still on dial-up. Everyone on the other road (about fifteen houses over two miles) has cable tv/internet access. Everyone on my road has satellite dishes barnacled to their houses. I could get satellite internet, but the connection/equipment fees are outrageous. I’m still waiting for the costs to come down. I usually take one day a week, for a couple of hours, and hit the wi-fi at the library to download any big files that have been sent to me, get my anti-virus and software updates, etc. Other than that, I use my computer at work (which I’m on now) for any “leisure” surfing.

sounds familiar Eric.
I live in Southwestern Ontario, less than 2 hours from Toronto, and we just got high speed availability this spring. We still don’t have access to cable. AND… with our cell phones, if we walk into our dining room, our service is local and if we walk into the living room, it is all long distance. And .. somewhere in between – we lose our reception.

That’s nice Debbie. At my home in New jersey. ! owned 14 acres. the fron 9 was one area code and the back 5 was a different area code. So I could get long distance to call myself. But I guess you do also.

Bill glad you are back on line. I should be home tomorrow and so I’ll get off a borrowed computer.

that’s hilarious Karson :)

My Grade 1 teacher (wow, was that a long time ago) had 2 phone lines in the house—one for one area code and one for another. Not many long distance charges in that house!

I learned my lesson back in 2002 … we were living in San Diego and couldn’t get Cel reception for nothin’ once you turned into our track. All the neighbors complained and complained … until the company decided to do something about it. What we ended up with was great cell reception and a obscured view of the ocean1

oh :(

that reminds me of our local major highway…. our little village didn’t want an exit at their town ( because it was to be the “end of the line” until they finished the next section of the highway). They didn’t want a lot of trucks going down their main street.
They fought the government – and won. Later, they realized that everyone uses the major highway and it would be convenient to have it exit at their town. Ha. Like that was going to happen. Now, the exit signs for the town are located AFTER the town and people have to backtrack to find it… Yah… “shoulda” looked a little further into the future to see the possibilities.
