no previous part Part 1 of Woodworking Awards 2008 - 2x4 series Part 2: The lumber has landed »

Well . . . DW (Dear Wife) did not like my initial idea for the 2×4 project so yesterday evening she spent a little time surfing the net looking for things she would like to have in the house. She found a XXXXXX and asked ”can you make this?”. I said ”yes . . . but there are dovetails involved . . . and I have not done dovetails before.” I started to think twice, but I said to myself . . . ”self, one of the main goals of the LJ WW Awards is to challenge one’s skills.” I decided on throwing caution to the wind and attempt dovetails.

A new project requiring new skills requires . . . you guessed it . . . new tools. A dovetail saw and layout tool to be more specific. I spent my lunch break and an hour after work looking for a saw. Found one at HD for $11 and got a dovetail layout tool for $2 at Princess Auto. I already have a japanese pull saw that may come into play and I have to sharpen my Marples.

I already have my 2×4 . . . its been in the shop since September so it should be well climatized.

Now I gotta go and watch Alin’s video about 15 times – http://lumberjocks.com/jocks/alindobra/blog/2755

Shhhh . . . its a secret. I’m afraid to say what it is because if I mess up the dovetails I will have to make something different. :-)

you guys are too funny.

Zuki.. you are exactly right: the intention of the challenges is to challenge OURSELVES. Way to go.

Hey Zuki, you posted this days ago. So far no pictures and as far as anyone can tell, no dovetails. I’m quite eager to see where exactly you’ll put your dovetails in your xxxxxxxx. I know when I made an xxxxxxxx the dovetails didn’t look quite right so I went with chicken wings. But hey, that’s just me.
