Shop Renevations #1: The start of something great

no previous part Part 1 of Shop Renevations series Part 2: The Door »

Okay, I have talked about this for a while, and I have been saveing some money for it, but I just now started the renevation of my home shop. I am going to be downgradeing in lengh but square feet wise, it is the same. the only thing that conserns me is infeed and outfeed length for my tablesaw. I can only cut about a 4 foot board with it, but anything larger I guess I can have run out the door. Me and my dad are doing all the work ourselves. We already moved everything over to the final place, or atleast near final. Then we started building a wall. The top of our basment is only about 85 inches, so the door barely fits in. We also have to have a inswing door(not my favorite, because then I can’t put something close to the door) because if it were outswing then it would interfear with pipes. We will be running some electrical pipe for the shop. What I am thinking is that we are going to put one on the outside for a future dust collector, and two on the inside, all of them on a 20 amp cicuit instead of a 15. We are also going to be putting up drywall, and placeing in the door soon. We arn’t putting insulation, becasue we don’t really want to mess with it, and we figure that The whole basement is heated so it will get into the shop somehow. The only bonus would be that it could be alot more quiet upstairs. Another really cool thing is tha now I have a window, with daylight, and I can open it to get fresh air. It needs to get cleaned though because It has been siting down in a basement for about 15 years cobwebs are all over it. I am really exited to get it done, and hopefully it should be drywalled and trimed and have the final touches by the end of the week, knowing my dad though that won’t happen. :)

Here are some pictures of the shop placement before the wall:

Hi Tyler

Your shop really looks great! You have some very nice tools to work with. What makes your shop extra special is that you and your dad are doing it together. YOU HAVE A GREAT DAD THERE BUDDY. To bad there are not more dads like him in this world. Keep us posted on the progess of your shop. I am working on a new shop now myself.

God Bless
tom

too bad about the door.. but that’s life. Gotta just work around some things.

Dad has other priorities, huh? :) Well maybe by the end of April you will have this complete.

Much better lighting, and the window is a nice addition too! I see you’ve got a shop dog now so the security issues will be covered. Overall I’d have to say that it looks like it will be better than before. Good Work!

Tyler,

You are looking here. This shop space is something to be proud of.

Thanks for sharing.

Looking good, Tyler, looking forward to seeing the shop unfold.

On another note, in the first photo I see a tripod. My shop has the same ‘tool’. I bet others do too! Isn’t it funny how blogging changes the way we work. ;)

I, too, thought that some insulation in the joists would lessen the noise upstairs.

Save your money. It was no help at all.

Hello, This is my first post on this so site so hello all! Tyler, if you havent bought your door or hung your drywall yet you could look into putting a pocket door there. They come as kits and are fairly easy to install, just a thought. For sound proofing, 2” thick pink foam (polypropaline)works wonders! Just put it up like drywall right over the joists easy and cheap!

You’ll want to make sure to keep the window accessible in case of a fire
