As you may know I am currently in the progress of my shop stool. I just compleated the assembly of the stool, and sanded everything. As you may also know I was going to have a part 3 about finishing. Well, I’m not. I actually began the video for part three, and decided that the stain I was useing was just not right. I am very mad about this and don’t know what to do. I had put the stain on a test peice and wiped it off, and it looked great. Well when it came time to stain the peice I guess it stood on the stool for to long and became a muddy, brown color, just after about 15 seconds!! (Lesson learned: Don’t use stain unless you have to, pick colored wood if you can, and when you stain make sure you like the color). I belive at this point that I am going to paint it. Then I will make a new one that I will leave natural. I don’t know why I even wanted to stain it, it looked great as it was. This makes me mad, becasue now I ruined the project and have to start over scratch. This time though I will do an even better job and make the whole thing alot faster. Thanks for all the support. don’t be mad – be glad!! Look at all the woodworking tips you now know that you didn’t before!!
You could call it your “lesson chair” and sit on it whenever you are struggling with how to do something… and then you can “think think think” and come up with the solution! Put a little happy face on it :)

Every aspiring woodworker has “Experiments” lying around. I know I do. It’s better to make lemonade I always say. Woodworking is like fishing in this regard; you are the only one who will know that this one got away. Anyone who looks at the finished project can (and will) comment on that nice painted finish.

Hi! Tyler,
I have three small cabinets that I was unhappy with the out come, and I will paint them one of these days. Just paint the stool and you will be the only one that knows that it wasn’t planned. Very few complete a project that they can’t point out some sort of mistake that they worked past. You’ve solved yours.

Hey Tyler, I have pieces of boxes I tried to make, they didn’t turn out right however I keep the pieces on my shelves. Someday I will make a box that I am happy with, until then I will keep making mistakes and learning.

I’m with the others, this was a learning experience. No one will know you did not intend to paint the stool unless you tell them. The next stool will be much better because of what you learned doing this one.
