Wine Country Woodcraft was born from my desire to continue a family tradition and continue a childhood passion of creating functional items using wood. I am a 4th generation woodworker and have some of my great-grandfather's tools and woodworking items. He builta home in the 1880's and is now part of the Farm Museum at the Great Smokey Mountain National Park in Western North Carolina( http://www.aboutcherokee.com/farm-museum5.html ) Growing up in a woodworking family gave me great respect for quality work as well innovative ideas. My Uncle Jack is a national recognized wood carver who learned from a Cherokee Indian both have items in the North Carolina Museum of Natural History. My Grandfather built dams for the TVA during The Depression and my father Ralph was one of the first to make wooden picking bins for use harvesting fruit where I grew up in Hood River , Oregon. He used scrap lumber from the mill my Grandfather Horace and Uncle Jack worked in Kinzua, OR. Using what was considered waste to produce a innovative item and my Mother Jean Smiley artistic talent were the early foundation to becoming a craftsman/artist.

Living in the heart of Oregon's wine country I found that once a wine barrel has been used for 7- 9 years to make some of the world's finest wine, the barrels are then disposed of and are often turned into planters. I wanted to use this 140 year old French Oak to create quality furniture that would not only look good on decks, but in tasting rooms, or an elegant living room. I build each piece with care and craftsmanship and it will last for many years. The character of the wood and give it durability are preserved and are guaranteed for life. I hope you enjoy using your hand crafted piece as much as I enjoyed building it.

Welcome 2 LJ. Judging by your craft, you must be somewhere in Northern California. We can get used barrels for about $50 here.
