Next Project: Brother's Books

Blog entry by WhiskeyWaters posted 256 days ago 127 reads 0 times favorited 4 comments Add to Favorites

Here’s the “plan” for my brother’s new shelving unit. The piece measures 31” x 31” or so, birch 3/4” ply. Anybody notice me being an idjit somewhere? Depending on how good the ply looks when I’m through with it, I’ll stain it. Otherwise, a good layer of latex paint.

I’m thinking a french cleat behind it to attach to the wall? Did I get that right?

The Shelf

The original design came from Brookstone, in case someone likes the piece. I just d/l the manual’s PDF and creatively modified the design. CAD design in Sketch-Up, which is a wicked cool program. Opensource & free is the way to go.

- thanks,
Whiskey

Nice plan Whiskey. Are you going to do anything with the plywood edges?

A french cleat will work fine on this. They make hanging wall cabinets a breeze. I have hung all my shop and garage wall cabinets this way. It is strong system and it makes removing the cabinets a snap. The only problem with them is one of aesthetics since, unless covered, the cabinets are offset from the wall 3/4”. But molding covers a multitude of sins.

Good luck.

French cleat definitely. Put a bumper block at the bottom so it hangs straight.

That is a great way to go about it.

Cool, nice design.

Looks like a good design. I find when working, that if I can’t see it, I don’t have it. Your plan takes care of that.
