Baby Steps #1: Looking for guidance

no previous part Part 1 of Baby Steps series no next part

After about a week, I just posted my first forum question.
Overall, I’ve found it tough to navigate the site.
For most of the forums I’ve joined, there’s always been a beginner’s forum.
Not this one though.

Hopefully someone will heed the call and help me out with some direction.

I’m considering buying the Logan picture frame shop in a box, but I want to get tools that are more heavy duty looking; the Logan stuff wasn’t too beefy.

On the other hand, I don’t even know if it’s necessary to get better tools for what I want to do.

I just want to be able to make nice looking frames frames; potentially large ones, up to 3×4 ft.

Pretty late, gonna hit the sack.

I just got the sudden urge to start buidling stuff.
No experience whatsoever...
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Regarding the lack of a beginner’s section:

Funny, I never thought of it before. But I don’t think you’ll find it a problem at all. I am a complete beginner to the craft, but have always (almost always) gotten very good feedback from fellow woodworkers who don’t treat me like a complete idiot.

So just blog away, or post on the forums, and you’ll see what I mean!

Hi! You’ve come to the right place about guidance. But for real woodworking guidance, somebody on this site will surely take care of that. I am here just for the pep talk ;-)

I found that the best way to get familiar with the site is to simply wander around. The Pulse button allows you to see what’s currently going on, and the Project, Blogs and Review tabs focus your attention a bit. There’s more information here than you can shake a stick at and I’ve always enjoyed stumbling on a new technique and fascinating project. From there it’s a small step to the Search function to find more of what interests you. If you’ve got a question, search the Skills Share forum to see if it’s been addressed already (it probably has) and if not, start a new topic and ask. You’ll get answers and insight from some of the best on the net.

Welcome to LumberJocks.

I am a newbie woodworker myself and this site is a great place for information….

I am not familure with the tool set you are asking about, But I will say there is something to be said about buying quality tools… check out my latest blog for my issues with a cheap router bit that came in a set.

IMHO after buying some of the starter type sets the tools bought in a set are not of the same quality as tools bought individually.

I hope this helps and don’t give up on the site… I have tried a few other woodworking forums and this is the only one I have felt truly welcome…....

Have fun be safe

Vripper:
It would seem to me that you might get a more qualified answer to your question if you posted it on a picture framers forum like this one highlighted in blue.
There may be someone here that can answer your question but as far as I can tell it is not mainstream woodworking and may not get you the answers you want.
The other thing that may be holding back responses is your rather nebulous topic title.

“Baby Steps #1: Looking for guidance”

Perhaps something like “Need help with picture framing tools” might get you more responses.

And,it never hurts to do a search before your question and even better do a Google search before that.

and maybe the ””help section will answer some of your questions about the site.
I think you get an email when you sign up with a link to these pages… used to, anyway.

I know this is late coming … sorry about that
