I am a sophmore in highschool in a woodworking class. I took the class as a freshmen and loved it. My brother got me started after his four years of highschool woodworking and now I am continuing the tradition. Our highschool shop class is not an ordinary shop class. This shop class does not have one single project that everyone builds and it is no small projects either. The projects are completely done by the students from disign and plans to finishing. Freshmen start out building high-end coffee tables, nighstands, and such cabinets, whereas seniors are building things as large as roll-top desks, 14-gun gun cabinets, and large grandfather clocks. This class is truely amazing. My freshmen year I built a nighstand with a tambered door, and this year i am building a five-sided corner gun cabined that will have a rotating gun rack in the middle and will store eight guns.

Wahoo! You joined the best woodworking club around, welcome to LJ!
Troy, it sounds like you have an exceptional teacher. I hope can’t wait to see your work and hope to see some of the work of the other kids. I hope your teacher can get involved too. I would even recommend that he gets involved.
LJ is such a great community of woodworkers and craftsman with various levels of talent and skill. Everyone is so willing to share and it is a great place to exchange information.

Troy, I second what Todd has just suggested. Get your teacher on LumberJocks! Imagine if he could get other teachers in other cities involved—get some young people building furniture instead of joining gangs! Now, that would make a difference!
