Cape Cod Bay Challenge #1: This summers BIG project

no previous part Part 1 of Cape Cod Bay Challenge series Part 2: 2 months and counting....then I can get back into the shop some. »

It’s been awhile since I posted much….busy at work and training for a BIG personal challenge.

I’m organizing a charity event for late this summer. The Provincetown to Plymouth Paddle Pilgimage to Prevent Plastic Pollution…...LOL…long winded but catchy….7P’s for short. Those of you that know me here know that I’ve taken up paddle surfing as therapy for some health issues. Well I decided to push a little further. Late this summer I will be doing a marathon 22 mile paddle across Cape Cod Bay to help raise money and awareness for charities fighting plastic pollution in our oceans.

Everyone that has gone to the beach sees the plastic that has washed up but that is just the tiniest tip of the iceberg. From the plastic bags that turtles choke on thinking they are jellyfish to beaches in Alaska 3 ft deep in plastic trash we are creating a mess that will not go away unless we do something about it. It’s also coming right back into the food chain in the seafood we eat along with the toxins it is so good at absorbing. This article shows some pretty disturbing numbers.

I haven’t left out the woodworking though…I’ll be using one of my paddles and hope to build this hollow wood paddleboard for the trip.

This is going to be a lot of work on a number of fronts…organizing the event (I hope to have 20 or so other Standup paddlers join me), training, and hopefully building the board. Unfortunately it will mean mostly lurking on LJ to see what my buddies are up to but not leave much time for contributing. I will blog the progress of the board if I end up building it (training will take up most of my weekends so we’ll see)

Here is the route if you’re interested. Wish me luck…I’m going to need it.

Bob, I hope this raises mucho bucks for this cause. If you post a link to the fund raiser I’m sure we could dig deep and help. It’s been a while since I’ve been to the Cape, let alone P-town, but if memory serves the waves can be quite daunting. Take care, and I hope you have some sort of chase craft.

GREAT to hear from you and I’m proud to be acquainted with someone trying to make a difference with this area of pollution. More importantly, it’s good to know your health is at the top of the list and you have found an outlet that allows you to keep up with your love of woodworking. I wish you all the best with this overall endeavor, Bob.

Way cool and valuable work for a good cause. Good luck on the paddleboard, which looks like a great project, and good luck with the marathon.

Bob, I am glad to see that you are not being idle. The project’s design looks outstanding. I am really interested in seeing the final product- if you can work in some shop time that is.

I wish you luck with both the marathon and the cause. As an environmentalist I applaud your effort and dedication for this cause it is a valuable one that tends to be largely overlooked.

I’m happy for you Bob.
It’s a noble cause and should concern us all.
There is so much we can do and for North Americans, packaging is our worst nightmare.
It often exceeds the value of the product.
There must be another way.

p.s good luck on your paddle. Take a thermos of hot chicken soup!

Thanks all….especially for the offers of support. I’m still in the early stages of planning this but we are planning awareness campaigns, beach cleanups at both ends, support boats, sponsorship marketing,...and the all important after party….not sure how much actual partying I’ll be doing after 22 miles of paddling though…:). I’m headed to Maui for a couple of weeks to help my brother with his board and paddle showcase ( I know…tough job, but someone has to do it). Once I get back the planning starts in earnest. I’ll let you know if we need some help Deb….thanks for the offer.

Read the article from Best of Life above. I guarantee it will disturb you. An area in the Pacific twice the size of Texas filled with plastic trash? And that’s not the worst of it.

The 3’ comment was anecdotal from my brother who goes fishing in Alaska most every year. It has to do with remote beaches that prevailing ocean currents dump trash on. Here’s a related article.
http://seagrant.uaf.edu/news/08news/01-23-08marine-debris.html

This website puts a somewhat unusual positive spin on it but it’s amazing that plastic toys spilled into the Pacific in 1992 are now washing up on beaches in the Atlantic. Just shows how far reaching the problem is.
http://www.rubaduck.com/news/rubber_duck_news-200302-duckies_around_the_world.htm

The more research I do the more disturbing this gets.

As requested Brad. I hope I get the time to actually build it.
