Good Day ....Bad Day

Blog entry by Bob Babcock posted 323 days ago 360 reads 0 times favorited 30 comments Add to Favorites

I had a nice Thanksgiving with family and friends…that was the good day. The bad day was that I went out to my shed today to find my new scroll saw, skill saw, and I’m not sure what else missing yet. Some lowlife obviously took the opportunity of an unlocked shed to help himself to my tools. Oh well, I guess the locks need to go on. I think what I hate more is just knowing that he is still out there.

Hope you all had a great day. Remember to lock up tonight…..:)

The spot in hell for tool thieves is even hotter than the one for those that burn figured timber. I hope you have a better insurance experience than Mot, or get your tools back. Sorry to here about this.

Bob, that’s awful. I’m very sorry to hear it. It’s too bad that people can’t be trusted.

I am glad to hear that the time with your family was good!

Oh, Bob, that’s awful. Maybe one of your neighbors saw something that you can report to the police and get the lowlife. Did you have your social engraved on the items stolen? That just makes me sick. I hope that nothing else turns up missing.

After losing more than 80K worth of stuff in a robbery this summer, I feel your pain, brother Babcock! I think they should be run off a 2 story building. I don’t give a crap what their reasoning for the theft is, or what liberal wiener wants to pat them on the head, take them to their bosom and rehabilitate them.

Bob, that is bad news. I would check the pawn shops in your area in the next day or two. If you have any serial numbers and a police report they will have to return your tools. Most people that steal tools don’t have enough sense to use them – so they are probably going to sell the or hock them. Well, I think I’m going to go out and lock my shop.

That sucks Bob. I had a bunch of stuff nicked from my garage/shop couple of years back (had left it open overnight), quite the kick in the guts. I did end up replacing the stuff I lost with even nicer gear but I hate the thought of em rummaging around while I slept. I’d tar and feather em, and I’m one of those liberal wieners Mot can’t stand :)

That is a big bummer ! Probably some local kid snooping around in your yard.

I’ve had tools stolen in the past, but that is another story. Never a good feeling.

Happy Thanksgiving… I guess it was the “giving” part they heard you say.
That just sucks. Bad enough that they go onto your property and then take stuff that you have worked hard to get but to do it on a day of celebration and “community”.... insult to injury :(

Isn’t your work area tucked away in your backyard all safe and sound???
and do be prepared for the ‘return trip”.

When I facilitated programs at a correctional centre, yes, Tom, I’m one of those: let’s fix them! (Cause you know, when they come out they could be your neighbours!)
Anyway, during a discussion of “what do want to achieve in life” they talked about wanting the same things everyone else does. And then a young kid said that he steals it from stores—oh I’m sorry, he said that he “takes” it from stores. He said that it is not stealing because it’s just a store and they have insurance for that kind of stuff and that he never ever hurt anyone during a break-in. The other members in the group were quick to point out that the owner of the store was definitely hurt by it. Anyway, I just found it fascinating to hear the “thinking” behind the rationales. Bizarre. (oh, and another guy once said: “It’s not stealing if it’s under a dollar and if you don’t get get caught.”) And now we know.

Bob, sorry to hear about your luck. I’ll tell you what if your insurance doesn’t cover your tools let me know what all was missing and if I have any of them I can spare or things that I don’t use I’ll send them to you. I guess you can almost call me a LJ insurance man. LOL! That’s the least I can do!

Those that steal definitely have a different way of thinking than the rest of us. It is such a violation when something like this happens. Fortunately for me, when my garage was looted, they literally climbed over my tablesaw and router table past 3 routers, 2 drills and a nail gun to get to a $70 bicycle.

Bob,

Sorry to learn of your misfortune.

Incidents like this make us change how we live. We have to lock our doors, I don’t like leaving my garage door open unless I am actually working in or near the garage.

Keep your family safe and secure your shop.

When I remodeled 2 years ago I had motion sensor lights and a cctv system installed all the way around my house and I live in a small community, this is after I had my boat stripped in my back yard, all electronics and trolling motor ripped off and a trailer to haul it all away. A few thousand dollar lesson. The cops think it was a transient from a nearby city that had already left the state. Could’nt get any of it back through insurance, just a good, hard lesson. Sorry to hear the same thing happen to you, Bob. You might keep an eye on Craigslist in your area, or any little newspapers that are printed locally. It does sound like some lazy bugger that would’nt know how to use them.

Hay Bob, thanks for reminding me to double check my doors at night. You never know who’s driving by and just happens to want your stuff. My shop is in my garage and I never leave the doors open so people can seen in for that very reason.

If you have any inkling of which neighborhood-kid got-your-stuff, I’d knock on their front door.

Ask them if they know what might have happened.

You might be surprised at what you might hear.

It may be lying next to some barn somewhere.

Kids sometime take stuff and not know what to do with it.

No suspects unfortunately. I live in a fairly rural area and while this stuff does happen, it’s infrequent. Seems to have been a rash of it lately though. Not sure exactly when it happened. Could have been any time in the last week

Thankfully I haven’t found anything else missing. Probably kids. They grabbed the shiniest things in the shop they could carry and ran. I’m just happy they didn’t take any of my fathers old tools. Those I can’t replace. Not that are worth anything other than sentimental value.

In addition to some heavy iron for the door locks I’ve installed an infrared motion activated cam. The door is also alarmed for good measure. I’ll leave the exterior lights on from now on as well. No more horses leaving this barn!

I’ve been watching craigslist and such…Nothing yet. Most likely some kids. There is always a bump up in these kinds of things when the kids are on vacation.
