Pyrographic artwork for "Save the Children" paddle

Blog entry by Bob Babcock posted 295 days ago 261 reads 0 times favorited 10 comments Add to Favorites

Hello All,

Long time no blog.

I borrowed a friends Burnmaster to try my hand at pyrography for the blade of my paddle. I’m a decent sketch artist but this is a first for me and woodburning (unless that done while a cubscout counts). I’m fairly pleased with the result.

I should have the epoxy and varnish done this weekend and get started on the auction shortly after that.

I’ve put it on the paddle on the left. My 1st paddle….tough to let it go but a good cause and all that.

I’m planing on doing the auction myself and focusing on the standup paddleboarding forums for advertising. I’ll try that 1st before trying eBay. What do folks think is a reasonable starting price?

Regards,

Hello Bob—you have done a masterful job with the pyro. Gorgeous.

I have no idea re: starting price. I couldn’t part with it – if it was mine.

Well, you should be pleased, Bob. That is some great looking art work. Now don’t wait so long to do another. Good cause and all that.

Bob,
Both of your projects are stunning! I would think any canoe sportsman would love to have one or both of those paddles. Are you going to burn some starfish or little fishies on the background of your whales? I wish I was artistic and able to do that kind of work. Great job, Bob.

Thanks for the kind comments all.

Hi Deb…:) It was a tough decision to use the 1st one. I think somehow it adds to it though. At least in my mind. It may stay in the family. My brother…who already has the other paddle has said he may bid on it to keep the pair together. He has some really beautiful wooden surfboards up on the wall in the Pono house. Lots of other nice water related art. So these would fit right in. If it doesn’t that’s good too. I’m making more.

You’re still Bob #1 to me. Maybe I should change my name back to treefarmer and my avatar back to a pint of guinness

Hi Thos…good to see you. I haven’t done any sketching just the sake of sketching in a long while. I really enjoyed doing these. Now I have another tool to add to the list. I may have to push this one to the top though. I’m making a bunch more paddles (siblings and such for gifts) and I now want to burn those as well.

Thanks for the info Dan. LJ of the frequently changing avatar….:) That sounds like a good place to start. I’m wrestling with going eBay or not. I guess it makes sense and opens it up to a lot more potential buyer’s. I need to look back into the charity posting.

Calgirl…I was thinking about adding some other fish to it but now I’m afraid of messing it up. A sneeze at the wrong moment and I’ve drawn a sea monster. LOL…I love your tagline…I could use some myself.

Great wood burning Bob!

You should get a bundle for this one. Let us know when you post it on ebay.

when I checked out Silent Auctions online I read that the starting bid should be 50% of “fair market value” of the item.
(if that helps)
