YorkshireStewart may have a lot of wood to harvest... - 16 replies

I couldn’t help but think of our buddy YorkshireStewart over there on the North coast in England, when I saw these images on the internet of the great storm that is raging over there right now. And then this one made me think that ole Stewart with his chainsaw could be busy gathering some great “windfalls.” ...

OK folks, some of you are not aware of the magnitude of talent that is represented on this site. We have many individuals here with several gifts and abilities. Air Nailers - 78 replies

Hello Friends, I would like some opinions on air nailers. I have been pretty slow getting into this, but it seems today that most woodworkers wouldn’t be without them. First of all: Which type of nailers would you buy first to outfit your shop for general woodworking. I realize that it depends on what you’re going to be do...

Help! - Motor problem :^( - 88 replies

Tonight I turned on my table saw, and the motor just hummed. I removed the belt, and it still just hummed. I took it out of the brackets, and blew it out with compressed air, and it just hummed (and smoked a little). It is a 1 hp Sears motor and is about 30 years old. Should I take it down to the motor repair shop or just get ready to order a...

Bandsaw Resawing Jig - 34 replies

Does anybody have a plan or picture of a fence (jig) that can be used for resawing on a bandsaw? I would like to use my saw to slice wood into thinner thicknesses, but the factory fence cannot be adjusted for drift. I was hoping that someone could post a picture of theirs or possibly give me a link to a PDF file of a plan. Thanks in advance.

Help with painting some cabinets needed - 17 replies

I have some cabinets in our kitchen that I would like to paint white. I was hoping that I might get some technical support on the project. First of all, right now they have clear lacquer on them, which is in good shape. Since they have clear lacquer on them, I was hoping to just spray on some white lacquer without primer. The guy at SW paint ...

Roger Federer wins the US Open!!! - Again - 77 replies

I love tennis as much as Don loves wooden boxes, and today I enjoyed watching Roger Federer win the US Open for the 4th time in a row. Even though he didn’t play his best, whenever he had to win the big points, he prevailed. I thought that this could be a woodworking topic because years ago, they used to use WOODEN racquets ;^D Are t...

Table Saw Blades - 36 replies

Hello Friends, I’m getting ready to buy some quality saw blades for my table saw. My question is this, if you could only buy (3) blades to do everything you needed to do on your table saw, which saw blades would you buy? Some examples might be this Freud Glue Line for smooth ripping: This Forrest Woodworker II blade for smooth...

Best woods for cutting boards - 18 replies

Hello friends, I’m getting ready to make a cutting board for my daughter and was wondering if mahogany would be suitable for making one. My plan was to use it along with maple for a nice contrasting color scheme. Question #1: Would mahogany be a good wood to use? Question #2: What would be the consensus on which woods are the best...

How do you embed rare earth magnets in wood? - 33 replies

I’m in the process of making a project that will utilize rare earth magnets to hold a light in place on a machine. I was wondering what type of glue to use to embed my magnets into the wood. Hopefully it’s something that Walmart, Lowes, or Home Depot carries, so I don’t have to order it. I just know that there’s pro...

HVLP guns - 24 replies

Hello Friends, Does anybody know how much “better” an HVLP spray gun is than a regular one? Is the quality of the paint job any better? Is a “conversion gun” as good as a HVLP turbine system? Could you get by spraying kitchen cabinets in place, if you were changing colors? If you already had regular spray gu...

Thickness Planer - 173 replies

Fellow Woodworkers, I am considering buying a thickness planer for my SMALL shop. I have tried to do without it, by trying to be good at resawing and then using my jointer to clean it up, but I need to have parallel surfaces and the planer is the only way I know of to accomplish that. I don’t have a lot of money to buy one, and IR...

Laminate trimmers - 41 replies

Fellow woodworkers,I have received some gift money for Father’s Day that I have not spent yet. I have been considering buying a laminate trimmer at Lowes (a DeWalt), but would like some thoughts on how much one would use this tool. I have seen it used for hinge mortising and for doing quick roundovers on cabinets. Do any of you have any...

Mission style woodwork projects - 14 replies

Hello friends, I have been inspired here by some of you who have displayed your projects in the mission style. This style has always appealed to me, but now I am really getting the bug to make a project using this style. I was wondering if anybody could point me in the direction of where I might get some decent plans to make some of this t...
