When Carleen and I bought this place 2 years ago, we felt like we bought the shop and Johnny threw in the house. The shop is 24×36 with a 10×16 addition on the east side. We have worked for ever on it and are still not done. The first thing I did was to install a 150,000 BTU propane furness. There is a roll up door in the wood shop side which is open most of the summer. You can tell where we worked by the new OSB. My son-in-law and I put a floor in the back room which was just gravel. We had floor tile so I installed them. Now it is about like a skating rink if you’re not careful. We had to move in tools and machinery because we were remodeling the house to make it livable. I think I might have a lifetime job here.
We bought the Jet tablesaw new two years ago. I got the band saw from Idaho Tool in Nampa. I had the DeWalt miter saw, ShopSmith, and a lot of the other tools. Most of the hand planes came from E-Bay. We decided to combine the wood shop and the saddle shop to see what we could produce.
The first photo is looking in through the roll up door. you can see the planer on its roll around stand and the chop saw on the right. I have a Kreg fence stop on the miter saw which I keep zeroed in. The second photo shows my old bench(17 years old) and plane boxes and chisels, etc. The third photo is the new bench I just finished. The Shopsmith I use for the drill press and the disc sander and occasionally as the lathe. The fourth photo is of the back room. The band saw is a 20 ” Delta(old). The lathe is a small Delta and the over arm router came with the ShopSmith many years ago.You can also see some of my sheet goods and lumber storage. The next photo is the saddle shop. This bench is also 17 years old. I built it when all I had was the ShopSmith. All the drawer are full of stamps and other things. The table top to the right has a cabinet with 2 drawers for pattern storage and open shelves as well. The top is a full sheet of 3/4 MDF over ? other layers and is used for cutting out leather items. The big black rock on the Bench is a black granite surface plate from Grizzly. It is 24” square and 3” thick. The green machine is a spliter, kinda like a planer for leather. This is where I carve and stamp leather. It is also used to skive(thin) saddle parts. Leather storage is straight ahead. The last photo shows my Pearson #6 harness stitcher and a small Singer we use for light leather. The singer has the only motor on this side of the wall. The stitcher is treadle operated and can sew up to 3/4 of an inch of heavy leather. The saddle shop is 20 by 24 and is also used for finishing and glue up of wood products. I really like this shop and enjoy most of my life here.

Tom;
Great shop. Well organized, and laid out!
It’s no wonder you enjoy your time there. For me my shop is my castle. (my wife can keep the house) LOL
I can’t stand a messy workspace, it really unnerves me, to the point it distracts me from my work / play.
I have to stop what I’m doing and clean up, (somebody else’s mess). makes me so mad.
Keep up the good work!
Lee

Lee, I just had the neighbor kids cleaning for half a day. We did some serious deep cleaning so I could reorganize and get things better. I hate the mess but seem to live in it for a while.
Wayne, I will run the plane racks as a project soon.

Nice shop. The best part is your’re away from all the city rukus and looks like you have some elbow room. I’m confined to a two car garage and only get part of that. I’m from mountain home originally but live here in southern nevada for work. Sure wish I was back in those wide open spaces. You really do have it good. Thanks for sharing

Looks good! I like the notes all over the bandsaw. Have you installed anti-fatigue mats over the tile to prevent slipping? I’m sure falling on a tile floor would hurt, smartly. I like your storage under the bench.

I envy you with all those planes.
I like the slots in the bottom portion of the desk for the hand power tools.

Karson, I don’t know. It goes back and forth. Probably about the time I’m sick of wood I work on leather until I’m sick of it and on and on. Business is not jumping in either place right now but there is some work ahead. I really don’t care which I do as long as it pays the bills. Thanks for the compliments.
Zuki,
They almost all came from E-Bay and went through rehab. They are users not collectors and they really get used. The power tool stall barn came about because I was tired of fighting all those cords.

Tom, should I join Wayne and you on “the slippery slope” of handplane restoration ( I am eyeing some #3 and 41/2’s), I would like to make up a storage unit like you have made. Do you have any tips on construction?

Your shop really looks great! I have always wanted a overarm router but don’t have that much need for it riight now. Your shop size is what I have in mind for my shop. I think thnk that with the number of peices of equipment that I hope to have I will really need about 1500 to 2000 sq. ft.

What a nice shop! I like how you have set it up. You have really used your space well. I like your mix of new and older tools, too. It always adds character to a shop when some of the old machines are still singing. Don’t you love that DeWalt 13” planer? I have the same one and it is an amazing machine. Thanks for the grand tour.

I was just looking at your shop photos again.
Did you ever find out who put all the graffiti on your bandsaw? LOL
Great work space.

Hi Tom
Great looking shop my friend! Your a man after my own heart. A place for everything and everything in its place. You got this old man chomping at the bit. If it ever gets warm enough I want to paint the shop first, then get the 220 service in and wire the shop. I am thinking about putting a wood floor over the concrete floor. What is your thoughts on this?
We have had the Ebay business for seven years now and we plan on helping each other once the shop is up and running. Does Charleen help you any in the shops or is she the foreman?
Thanks for the inspiration.
God Bless

Hi Thomas,
I don’t know how I have missed this post before now but I am glad it came up on my list. You have a nice shop. It is well organized and I admire the way you clean it up. I have a difficult time doing this until I get yelled at and them I am givn enough incentive to do it. :) You have a nice blend of power and hand tools.
Nice shop. Thanks for the tour. I really appreciate it.

Nice workspace Tom, room for both hobbys. I’m still trying to get all the things I want done in mine to, its been almost three years now. Not enough hours in the day.
