Free woodworking plans site - 10 replies I haven’t been entirely through this site, but based on what I have been through I’m assuming that it’s legit. The site is pretty comprehensive and covers an entire variety of plans for free. I didn’t find this link already posted on this site, so I thought I would share it with those that haven’t been there befor... |

What has your biggest challenge been? - 70 replies What has your biggest challenge in woodworking been so far, and what did you do to resolve it? Right now, my biggest challenge has been joinery. I’m still working on perfecting hand cut dovetails (I’ve got a looong way to go!!) I took a hand cut dovetail class by David Marks about a year ago, and he gave me helpful insight. I... |

Old tool Preservation - 14 replies I love to tinker around and restore old tools. Since my shop is not temperature controlled year around, sometimes all my hard work tends to draw a little moisture. So, to prevent rust from invading my tools, I’ve used a variety different methods to try and preserve them. I’ve used paste wax and some spray waxes, spray zinc-based... |

Mobile Planer/ Jointer stand - 8 replies I’m looking for some ideas to build a mobile planer and jointer stand. The one I have now is not sufficient and takes up too much space with absolutely no storage. I put it together in a real hurry about six years ago. It’s one of those great big wire spools with casters. (don’t laugh too hard… if you have to, let me ... |

Fire therapy - 45 replies My wife and I have been cleaning out our barns the last two days. We’ve been married about 14 years and stuff has piled up on us. It is to the point where I’ve felt like it’s all piled on my chest. We have two big barns, one is about 24×36, the other is 36×54, and she has a small one car garage about 16×24. N... |

Is there a better way to glue finger joints? - 7 replies I’ve been messing around a lot lately with finger joints. I’ve been using a brush and Titebond glue, and it just seems like there must be a better way to do this, especially if you glue in a rabbeted bottom. I tape off the inside of the box to catch the glue squeeze out. This seems to take forever…. Does anyone have any t... |

Planing/Surfacing Burl or Curly wood - 16 replies I have a small board of walnut with some sapwood, and it has some fantastic figure in it. However, I can’t seem to plane it without chipout. I’m plaining with the grain, so to speak, not against it. I’ve never worked with wood that has figure in it, and I’m looking for some guidance to plane it so that I can use it. A... |

Finishing with Armor-All??? - 3 replies OK… I’ve never tried this, (scared to death to)... but I read this in FWW’s Proven Shop Tips (pp44). For woods like purpleheart and padauk you can apply Armor-All a few times before the finish to keep it from changing it’s color and darkening due to the ultraviolet light. The writer of the tip suggests three to four app... |

Yep, I'm the new guy. - 33 replies I thought I’d introduce myself… I’ve been in the LJ forum for about two days. You all seem like a great bunch of folks. I’m 35 years old. I’ve been into carpentry and woodworking for about 15 years or so, but I’ve never really fine tuned any skills. Jack of all trades, you could say. Because of my job a... |
