Today I finally ordered my new Rikon 10-325 14” Deluxe Bandsaw. Woodcraft said it would take 7-14 days for it to come in. Seems weird spending so much money for something you don’t have… lol. I read Dick Cain's review, and I was sold (by the way, Dick, thanks for that awesome review!).
I’ve wanted a bandsaw for years, but I’ve never gotten around to getting one. The price has went up since Dick’s review, I’m assuming metal and fuel costs. I’m going to purchase a mobile base for it, and a variety of blades. The general consensus is that the blade that comes with the saw is not too fantastic. Since there are quite a few experienced bandsaw users in this community, I thought I’d ask a couple questions.
Has anyone here had any success with a “reasonably” priced mobile base for one of these, or has anyone made their own for this or similar equipment? I think this machine is about 250 pounds… so, the base would have to easily handle that weight.
Also, I’ve seen several reviews on blades here. I really want this machine to cut planks from some oak and hickory timber on a sled, and I want to do some resawing. Any suggestions from those that have done this type of milling?
Are there other accessories that you guys can’t live without, is there anything else I should be considering?
I have “zero” experience with a bandsaw, and anything would help….
Thanks in advance….
—-Steve

The ” Woodslicer” from Highland Hardware is a great re-saw blade. HTC makes a great mobile base. You may consider a magnetic worklight for your bandsaw as well. Happy sawing!!!

Congrats! I have the same saw and I put it on a mobile base that I bought at the BORG for about $30. It sits on it OK; I had to put a sheet of ply across the bottom. Mobile bases are really nice when you want to move them, and kind of not nice when you have the machine located. I guess I would actually want a removable mobile base. (?)
Side note: make sure you put some wax on the top the minute you remove the shipping goo.

Steve,
Congratulations!
I’m sure you will find yourself going to the Band Saw more and more as time goes by.
It’s one of my favorite tools… along with the Router.
Enjoy!

Good deal, you should have a lot of fun with your new toy.
The blades that usually come with bandsaws are really junk. I break them up and use them to make a bowsaw.
Get a woodslicer blade from highland hardware. It’s the best I have found for the price.

Thanks all, for the starter advice. I think I’ll order the book in the next day or two.
Also, Spalm- I would not have thought about putting wax on it immediatly…
And, it sounds like Highland Hardware has the market here in resaw blades… This community is so fantastic, if you think for just a second about how much money everyone saves just by following the experiences of others. Thanks again, I appreciate it!!!

Steve:

Here is a photo of what I use. It is from Woodcraft $40 for the four legs. You need to drill four holes in each leg to mount them. They are featured in the current issue of WOOD magazine along with others. These are the most inexpensive, don’t raise the hight of your tool, and support 600 lbs.

Hi Steve
Glad to hear your getting a new band saw. I have to buy one myself but not till after I get the table saw. The shop itself needs to get done first. Just bought the materials for the 200 Amp service today.
Let me know what you think of your band saw after you use it awhile. Happy for you!
God Bless

Nothing like a new tool !!!
I keep an assortment of bands for mine. Narrow bands for scrolling, and wide bands for ripping. I thing I have one of every size and 5 new ones of the three sizes that I use most. I do not hesitate to put a new saw on when it dose not seem to be cutting the way it should be. I keep to carbide bands as well.
After you wax it, but before you even turn it on read the manual all the way thru. Make sure that the guides are properly adjusted and that it is tracking correctly.
All three bases are good but I like the set that toolz is using, as it sits down on the floor firmly.
Wax it after each use to keep the wood moving smoothly and so no rust pops up over night.

Steve, Instead of wax, I’d highly recomend Boshield. I have used it for a few years now and it is a wonderful product made by Boeing. Remove the cosmolene with some mineral spirits and put on a wet coat of the Boshield. Let it set for a few minutes and then buff with some paper towel. It keeps the cast iron looking great and keeps it nice and slick; without any residue to affect the wood. Their derust spray is very good too…

Hello Steve;
—-getting in here late, but then again….better late then never.
Congratulations on the bandsaw and I believe this one will give you many years of delight with wood. I might also add that out of all my power machines….the bandsaw is my favorite and the one I keep coming back too.
.....also, those mobile bases work great!
Thank you.

Frank

I picked the saw up yesterday with a mobile base. It took me a couple hours to assemble and clean everything on it, and apply the boeshield. I got to do all the bearing adjustments today and actually cut some wood with it. I’m really surprised how easily this thing cuts thru oak and hickory. It’s much easier than I had imagined. I’d recommend this saw to anyone who is looking…
